We have a lot of Melissa and Doug items and we're always generally very impressed with them. The cupcake set is great fun and our six year old wanted it so much that she bought it with her own money. To start off with, it's a high quality toy. They're basically wooden cupcakes with candles that velcro on top. The whole concept of the icing markers is fun and all the kids (friends included) enjoy "decorating" the cupcakes. The part you draw on is a sort of plastic lid that fits over the wooden cupcake and is supposed to look like icing. It even comes with a little baking tin (wooden) and an oven mitt. There are paper cupcake liners in fun patterns included that aren't going to last forever, but hey...they are paper. We've generally got liners in the pantry so that's not a huge deal.
The big flaw in this toy is that the wooden cupcakes are not finished in a type of paint that will allow you to wipe the dry erase marker off of them. Only the plastic "icing" can be erased. Admittedly if you look at the very fine print on the back of the box it reads "Markers are intended for wipe-off icing surfaces only. Do not use markers on other components." Realistically however, giving kids some dry erase markers and letting them go to town on pretend cupcakes, is going to result in the entire cupcake getting "decorated." In the scheme of things it doesn't really matter because my daughter loves them anyway, but it does keep me from giving this toy Melissa and Doug's usual high approval rating. If this is something that is going to upset you or your child, you'd be better off buying another of their products.
I got this on a whim during the 12 Days of deals that Amazon has going on the first two weeks of Christmas. My daughter is 3 and has been obsessed for the last few days with these! I was really surprised actually how into them she is. I got them mainly as a oven item for her play kitchen but she is loving decorating them. I wouldn't pay 20 bucks but if you could get A deal on them they are a great buy! The candles are a flopping pain to stick in like other reviewers said.
My 4-year-old daughter received the Melissa and Doug Bake and Decorate Cupcake Set as a gift and she and her sister have enjoyed playing with it. It's a toy that they can enjoy together.
The "icing" can be difficult for younger children to snap on and off the cupcakes and because the cupcakes and icings come in different "flavor", your creative bakers will want to mix and match. This can result in a grown-up having to frequently switch out the icing, but the decorating can easily be done by the children.
In our house, not much happens in the way of "baking" these cupcakes. The cupcake tray is mainly a storage device for the cupcakes when we put the toy away. The majority of the play is decorating the cupcakes, putting a candle on, singing "Happy Birthday" to someone and then starting all over again
The dry-erase markers can leave a stain on the plastic, as dry-erase markers tend to do. It can take a heavy hand to remove all of the color, but the kids don't seem to mind this too much and they can do a pretty good job of erasing on their own. This toy is great for exercising those "cupcake decorating" skills and just getting the kids to play with each other.
I'm a big fan of Melissa and Doug products and this one doesn't disappoint. Except for the paper cupcake liners, the product is durable and fun.
I purchased this toy for my 3 year old last christmas. It was very well made. Shes played with it everyday this past year and its still in wonderful condition. We were skeptical of this product because of the price, but it was very well worth what we paid. We would definitley purchase this item again, we would even recommend it to friends and family. The item arrived quickly also. Wonderful learning toys! we love melissa and doug toys
We bought this when my son was about 2.5 years old and, one year later, he still loves baking cupcakes in his kitchen. That's a great endorsement when you consider how fickle toddlers can be. He has many other toys that he lost interest in despite the fact that they're pretty new.
CONS:
MARKER ICING
I read the reviews about the markers so I never let my son touch the icing. This caused a mini tantrum, but I knew he would have been even more upset to realize he couldn't clean his cupcakes. He also really hates getting marker on his fingers and hands, so the markers would have been confiscated eventually. I thought about gluing the caps on and letting him use them for pretend play, but he and I both completely forgot about the markers after the first week. He still thoroughly enjoys playing with the set even without the icing markers.
PAPER LINERS
The paper liners were crushed and crumbled right away. We still have some, but paper seems like a pretty odd choice when the rest of the set is so well made. The cupcakes, the candles, the icing markers, and the cupcake tin are all wood. The icing (cupcake cover) is a sturdy rubber/plastic and the mitt is fabric. I love keeping his toys complete but every time I see those paper liners, I just get the urge to dump them in the trash.
PROS:
My son is turning 4 soon and he still loves this. He makes us cupcakes every week. He made us all birthday cupcakes yesterday with the same amount of glee and fascination as he did when we first opened the box. Despite the toy's CONS, it has staying power and we definitely got (and continue to get) our money's worth out of these.

The Melissa & Doug cupcake pretend play set offers parents and older children an opportunity to engage with younger kids in several creative ways. Grownups can have kids make cupcakes to order, tell a story about the cupcakes they are baking, and describe whether they’re for a special party, holiday, or event. Or, they can have kids look at the candles, then hide one candle while kids close their eyes, and ask kids to describe the missing candle. The Melissa & Doug Bake & Decorate Cupcake Set makes an exceptional gift for kids from 3 to 5 years. Add the Melissa & Doug Wooden Sandwich-Making Set to round out the hands-on, screen-free play experience.

My daughter has owned this set for about 2 years now, and not only has it held up very well, it has become our go-to gift for any little girl's birthday! These cupcakes are loved not only by my 4-year old, but also by my 1-year old, and my 2-year old twin nieces, their 10-year old big sister, and all of my daughter's 3-4 year old friends. There are 4 of them in the set, so plenty to share! I found it a bit disappointing at first, because I didn't realize that the 'icing' was plastic (we went far out of our way to ensure that the entire kitchen set was wood or fabric), but. . . it only makes sense that it has to be for the markers. At this point the dry-erase markers are dried up and gone, but we had fun with those while they lasted. The ONLY problem we had with that is if you don't wash the cupcakes clean as soon as the kids are done playing with them, they do stain the plastic. Also, kids tend to mark on the velcro (for the candle) with them, and that won't wash clean. My kids are not in the slightest bit bothered by this, so I don't let it bother me. After so much time has passed, I'd say that I still WOULD prefer the icing to be made of wood or fabric, and wouldn't have a problem with eliminating the markers altogether from this set. Those were fun while they lasted, but. . . looking at a toy that will in all likelihood last a lifetime, the markers are kind of a gimmicky short-lived thing. It would also be nice if M&D offered replacements for both the markers and the cupcake liners. As mentioned in the other reviews, these are just slightly thicker than normal paper liners, and didn't last very long - though they were fun while they did - they should at least have been cardstock! All in all, we have gotten many hours of fun with these cupcakes, and they're always the first thing they go to when playing in their kitchen! You get a very high-quality toy for the price. . .I highly recommend these to anyone!
Got this as a gift for my 3 year old and the first one was broken. The icing caps didn't fit the cupcakes snug enough and kept falling off and one of the cupcake wrappers was missing. Amazon quickly replaced it with a new one and the new one is much better. You use the marker "icing" pens to draw on the icing caps but they do smear and get on hands and other things if not careful so watch out. The colors also don't come out correctly when you draw on the icing caps, so blue becomes purple and pink and green are lighter in color. Other than that this is a cute set for pretend play.
This set is adorable! We got it for my 2.5 year old daughter and she loves it. She’s had fun decorating them. The only thing I’d change is the cupcake liners are regular paper, so we basically tossed them all after a few days. It would’ve been cool
If they had been plastic or some type of fabric or more durable material.
My daughter got this toy b/c she has been pretending a lot of with cupcakes lately. She LOVES it! So, I am giving this toy a 5 star review b/c my daughter is just in love with this toy - she plays with her cupcakes every day since she received this toy a few weeks ago!
Pros:
- You get 4 cupcakes! 2 vanilla and 2 chocolate. Also included is 4 different frostings, 3 icing markers to decorate the frosting with, 4 candles, 8 cupcake liners, pan and oven mit. Its a lot!
- The icing markers! By far one of my daughter's favorite thing to do is decorate the cupcakes. The frosting can easily be cleaned with a baby wipe or damp cloth (NOTE: highly recommended to clean immediately after playing.. if you let the "icing" sit overnight it makes it more difficult to clean the frosting).
- Very durable. As with all Melissa & Doug Toys, the cupcakes are just fabulous - they are wood, and incredibly durable.. gotta love M&D!
Cons:
- The cupcake liners will not hold up that long.. they have done good thus far, but I only allow my daughter to play with the toy (I regularly host playdates at my house and would not trust that these cupcake liners would hold up to several kiddos!) - They could have done better on them.. they are just a little heavier than regular cupcake liners you would buy at the store.
- The icing markers.. note that is a pro - well, its also a con for the simple reason that they are permanent! They are only erasable on the frosting part of the cupcake - when she accidentally drew on the actual cupcake, well, the mark is still there.. cant get it off.
Overall, I highly recommend this toy - my daughter loves her cupcakes!
I bought this set of Melissa & Doug Wooden Pancake Set as a gift for my niece! She loved it! We do own similar wooden food sets from Melissa & Doug as well! My girls love using the food sets while playing in their play kitchen! I love how sturdy the wooden food sets are! My girls love how realistic they are!
