My honest review with this laptop is 4/5 stars. I just want to start and say I’m impressed that I was able to stream live on twitch using OBSlabs overlays, playing league of legends, playing Spotify, and using discord while maintaining 120-144 fps at the highest graphics. Now I’ll give you my opinion about price, quality, and performance. Being a gamer and researching heavily into the graphics field, I will say this is a well performing laptop. IT DOES GET HOT BUT there are ways to mitigate that. Remember, THIS IS A GAMING NOTEBOOK. I will say this again. A notebook. Which are usually 15.6 inch screens, not a 17 inch screen that provide more space for cooling. Its a thinner laptop so you’re going to feel the heat more. To Mitigate the factor, UPDATE your BIOS first. The latest update was last November. DO NOT undervolt if you are willing to risk damaging your laptop. Secondly, you can lower the GPU and CPU temp in the Omen Vital Controls which is already on your desktop menu after setting up. I keep mine on the lowest option called “comfort” instead of default while utilizing the battery at the best performance. This laptop still boosts to a maximum performance of 3.9 gHz instead of 4.1 gHz if you undo the default option and select the “comfort” option. I’ll show you in the pictures. Thirdly, do yourself a favor and buy a “laptop cooling pad” which will favor you in 2 ways. It’ll raise your laptop, plus boost that intake of cool air since the intakes are already under the laptop. This laptop has excellent intake fans internally on the bototom, you just need to raise the laptop if you’re going to be doing heavy gaming to keep your laptop safe. Lastly, buy a “OPOLAR laptop fan cooler” which intakes and pushes out air using a USB port. It has parts that come with it so you can either permanently attach it to an exhaust, or do a quick install which comes off and on easily. I install mine on the right side of the exhaust. The reason I do this is because the battery plugs in right next to the exhaust. All that hot voltage from the battery itself is coming in from there ( the most vital spot ), first entrance. You’re looking at paying an extra 40-50 $ total for a “laptop cooling pad and a opolar cooling fan USB.” I’m able to safely play low optimized games like escape from tarkov which take up way more usage on your CPU/GPU, in term making your computer work harder, at safer temperatures. This game is actually Russian but in English so if that’s not a good test idk what else is. Your laptop will never exceed 80 C max in the CPU temperature when playing lower optimized games that are not supported well with graphics. The highest I’ve seen my laptop was nearly 100 F while playing low optimized games like Escape from Tarkov. Being an Electronics Technician, your laptop should not exceed 100 F for a couple of hours of straight gameplay. So when I play higher optimized games, the more popular ones ( you’ll know by titles ) like Battlefield, Overwatch, Fortnite, you’ll be getting about 80 - 95 F steadily while maintaining nearly highest graphics. In all, this is totally fine for long hours. Remember this is not C temp. Don’t get mixed up with it. 70-80 C temp is safely perfect for gaming. These note book laptops are designed to take in heavy heat, and you’ll be satisfied with the performance at the same time. The laptop is very thin, nicely built, and has a beautiful display that’s very fast. 144 hz is a huge game changer. I’m also a huge fan of GSYNC. It makes any graphics look 10x better, even at medium or high graphics, you’ll think you are playing near ultra. For the price, I got this laptop during Black Friday week for1400$. You can’t beat the price for the performance. I will say I was also upset that it wasn’t a gtx 1070, but you’re only losing 10% peformance, mainly FPS when running the highest graphics. A 1070-max-q is not far from it, and is a common thing for notebooks now a days. It's suppose to help reduce temp and battery usage. If you want an actual 1070, you should be looking at 17 inch gaming laptops. Gtx 1070 is slightly more powerful but will take a lot more energy, thus more heat. I recommend that you do not get a gtx 1070 for a 15 inch laptop. This is a 1070-max-q, probably best suited for this laptop. I hope everyone can look at this review and make a decision based on a honesty. I have experience in electronics, gaming, and even built desktops. Take a look at the pictures attached. I’m still investigating this laptop with more use, and I hope it satisfies you as I try to find more ways to make sure this laptop is efficient in your needs.

My review pertains to the i7 8750H GTX 1070 144hz Display 32gb RAM model. This thing is a beast. I can confirm it is capable of hitting 144 fps on Rocket League, Overwatch, RB6 Siege on Ultra settings so far.

It definitely gets hot. The metal chassis above the keyboard could probably fry an egg when you're gaming. The keyboard also gets noticeably warm as well but I attribute that to the incredible specs and the GTX 1070 being housed with an i7 8750h. I have experienced 0 thermal throttling in 2 gaming sessions that exceeded 3 hours each.

Edit: Just wanted to clarify that I'm getting better temps by undervolting the CPU now, no crashes. The GTX 1070 is a Max-Q but still doing great. I recently tested it using the mini-display port out to HDMI on a 2K 100hz 34' Ultrawide monitor and Rocket League and Overwatch look great at 2K 100hz.

Let’s just get a few important flaws out of the way.

First, as a few reviews have mentioned, this laptop has a 1070 Max-Q and not a standard 1070. HP is being deceptive whether purposefully or accidently by not listing this on the product description. I did a lot of research before purchase and it doesn’t say anywhere even on a technical manual that this model has a 1070 Max-Q.

Next this laptop is loud even on idle. And there is no setting to really change it. The OMEN software it comes with only has two modes for fans and the other performance mode only makes it louder.

My first laptop was a HP and it was the worst hunk of junk I’ve ever purchased. From that point on I swore to never get a HP computer again. Then 2018 Black Friday rolls around and I saw this laptop on sale. I was looking for a computer for a while and the hardware on this laptop with the steep discount was simply too good to refuse. It took a lot of convincing for me to get a HP laptop again. Now I’m a pretty tech savvy guy and when I saw that this laptop description claim it has a 1070 I immediately suspected that it was the Max-Q version, because it’s too small and thin to have a full 1070. I did some research and there was more evidence of it being a full 1070 at the time, since this was a new model there wasn’t much documentation or discussion about it. I got the laptop and was a little disappointed to find that it was a 1070 Max-Q after all but that didn’t bother me too much. Unlike some people out there I actually have a pretty favorable opinion on the Max-Q line of graphics cards. Even tough it may have lower performance you get better thermals, smaller size, and longer batter life. Which I don’t think is a terrible trade off, but to teach his own. You probably won’t find a laptop with a full 1070 with such a small form factor and portability.

The 32 GB of RAM is a bit excessive you probably won’t need more than 16 unless you’re doing some intense video editing. But the ram is RAM is DDR4 2666Mhz, which is pretty fast when it comes to laptop RAM and that’s a nice plus especially for gaming. The storage is kind of a mixed bag. On one hand you get a PCIE NVMe SSD which is one of the fasted storage memories out there (almost 2x as fast as regular SSD!) but you only get 500 GB of it. Kind of sucks that they don’t give you a HDD option like the other models but I suspect they’re using that space for the 1070. The CPU is i7-8750H is extremely common when it comes to higher end gaming laptops, and the reason it’s so common is because it’s pretty good. Solid 6 core i7 CPU, proven to be reliable over the last few months. One of the best aspects about this laptop is the monitor. When talking about laptops one of the most important aspects is the monitor and I can say for certain this laptop has one of the best on the market. 1080p 144hz IPS G-sync display is pretty much a list of everything that a gamer could ask for in a laptop monitor, honestly this is the strongest motivator for me when I bought this laptop. Love the display and games look great on it, no complaints what so ever.

I won’t exactly recommend this if it’s not discounted but it is a great laptop for the price. It’s got some things you don’t realllly need like the 32GB of RAM and the super fast SSD, but they’re nice to have. Personally I think the pros far outweigh the cons and I’ve enjoyed my purchase so far.

I purchased this laptop on the 12th of Dec 18. It is a great laptop! 144MHz refresh truly makes a big difference. However, this comes with the 1070 Max Q version graphics card, Amazon did not make that clear when they advertised it which I consider deceptive. I'm happy with the laptop I just would have liked to know I was getting the Max Q 1070 version graphics processor. I play Battlefield V, PUBG, and Fortnite on the settings recommended by the game for this laptop and the graphics are OUTSTANDING for such a small laptop. The only issue is the heat this thing generates. I recorded 100 Cs while playing games. I don't know how long the components can last at those temperatures. I got help from HP support to try to bring down those temps; we updated the bios, installed latest drivers but no luck, the temps have not come down. I don't believe I should have to under-volt or disable this laptop in anyway to play games at levels the gaming software recommends for the specs of this laptop. Bottom Line Up Front, I highly recommend this laptop. Last thing, HPs support has got to be the best that I have experienced yet and I have owned many computers; professional, competent, and grateful you purchased their product.

Great laptop for a great price. Feels solid, great performance. I purchased the version with the 1070 Max-Q with 32gb of RAM and a 512GB SSD

If someone purchases this laptop and thinks its going to have MacBook level battery life, they are wrong and should feel dumb. This is a gaming laptop, this means you can travel with this but it is still intended to be plugged in in order to play anything. Overall the battery life is as expected, not stellar but not awful. I was able to watch movies consistently on battery for approximately 5 hours before complete discharge.

Gaming performance is phenomenal. Very little thermal issues if you use the comfort setting in the Omen software. The screen is ok, not the best, there is some color correction needed but that can be fixed ans the refresh rate and G-sync are a must have.

The Chassis feels very solid with no weird flex or bends on the body, there is however a hot spot under load just above the keyboard, you do not feel this while gaming. The keyboard is nothing special, it works.

Highly recommended as a good reliable laptop FOR GAMING. Do not expect this laptop to be great for off the charger use though.

Play at your best from anywhere -without sacrificing performance. The OMEN 15 Laptop keeps you moving and improving, with desktop-class graphics performance, immersion, and upgradability.

I bought this because of the video card -- it's fantastic! Everything is very fast.
The video card is Max-Q design which means the laptop is thinner than would be otherwise, though because of that, I suspect, the video card is throttled (performance is capped) so it doesn't overhead (not a problem - just noting that the laptop's thinness likely comes at the 'price' of mildly slower performance when compared to the non-Max-Q counterpart).

Keyboard is solid, love the red glow. Track pad comes with two mouse buttons. And the monitor has such a low lag and such a high refresh rate - every app glides smoothly with no visual delay - everything feels instant!

First off I got this laptop for a great price so I really can't complain but here's my "first world problem": Apparently you can't enable the touchpad while using the keyboard. This makes the idea of this being a "gaming laptop" totally bogus because in a game who doesn't look around while walking with the WASD keys? I've spend a little time Googling how to fix this but neither the Synaptics driver nor Win10 provide a setting. Also they give you a full-sized numpad on the right but I kinda find it useless...what's the point? They could have put in a bigger and properly centered/less crampt keyboard and that would have been much better. At least the key action is way better than the horribly spongey action of the MacBuck$.

I absolutely love this laptop! I have been using it now for a few months and it is great. The screen quality is wonderful and the hardware in it pack a powerful punch for a laptop. This laptop really is the best bang for your buck! The G-Sync display on the laptop really makes me want to take the plunge and replace my monitors on the gaming rig that I use as my daily driver, its just that great. This laptop keeps up will with most all modern games better than I honestly expected. It does get a bit warm so I usually keep it on a tray table or desk when I use it but that is to be expected given the hardware that it is using. I love this laptop and would absolutely recommend this to any enthusiast looking for a new laptop.

PRO: 144hz monitor
32 GB ram DDR4 2600
512 GB SSD PCIE NVMe
CON: Its a virus in this computer is a MCafee malware(Unistall this program please if you pay for a fast computer)
OCZ Toshiba program not reconice my NVMe SSD :(

I've had this laptop for maybe 2 weeks now and i have only great things to say about it. I sold my previous PC because the old AMD cpu was already getting old and i would play Black ops 4 on the lowest settings and it would just be choppy. It couldnt handle new games as much anymore. I looked and looked and found this laptop with a GTX 1070-Max-Q, I7-8750H, 144hz screen. It was ecactly what i was looking for, got it on sale for $1,400. the only issue with this laptop im experiencing is it has little space (thats expected considering i knew it had a 500gb SSD only). All that being said, this thing games Black ops 4 on the highest graphic settings like a champ! the gameplay is so smooth. i would absolutely recommend this laptop to anybody thinking to buy.
