I've only used for studs. I find that the readings are a little confusing when finding the edge. The center mark seems to be accurate however the edge mark's are off. The edge marks sometimes go on for as much as a quarter inch but usually about an 8th. Making it seem like the stud is 2in thick when it's actually 1.5in.
I use the below to accurately measure a 1.5in stud
1) measure from left to right
2) move to right, continuing to move even though the arrow and edge bar appear. Stop and mark wall when the edge bar disappears.
3) continue to move and mark center.
4) measure from left to right
5) find right edge using steps from 2.
6) verify center.
This usually results in a stud width of 1.5in sometimes an 8th smaller
Usually i dont care for the edge so I mark the center from each direction and drill, nail or screw in between those marks.
Note: center mark had a little give too. This I find is usually less than an 8th of an inch. Also, sometimes reading the same stud edge can give inconsistent readings.
Even with the above, I will not be returning. It works well enough for my needs and the AC wire warning had already saved me. You can even track the wire for horizontal or vertical runs.
All in all. I will recommend because the reading errors may be caused by imperfect studs, drywall screws or something else.
I have verified that this device does indeed locate wood wall studs and Live AC wires accurately. My simple accuracy test was to find the center of my first stud and see if the second stud center was 24" apart. Center to center measured 23.75". For repeatability, I measured from that second stud to a third and it measured 24.25". I don't know what tolerance construction workers must keep but it is close enough for me. I have been disappointed for years with a variety of "Stud Finders". My search is over. I bought another one the same day I received this one and sent it out as a gift...Isn't it great to be satisfied with a tool? Congratulations Vivreal for putting out a very good product at a very nice price.
This thing is awesome! I've struggled to find one that actually works...this one does and identifies the center of the stud. No more extra holes and missed stud. I love it! It indicates visually and beeps when you have it centered.
Very well constructed, solid body finder. Easy to use, yet does take slightly longer than other finder for initial calibration before sweep. Would suggest a few extra passes to find exact center before drilling. Used it to mount floating shelf on a wall that shares with the hallway bathroom shower, and worked wonderfully. Much better than my old Stanley finder. Worth the money and would suggest to my crafty friends in the future.
Simple and reliable. Takes a 9v battery (not included) and has a low battery indicator. Great for using around the house on multiple surface types. Follow the included instructions for best results. It can find wood and metal studs as well as electrical wiring. Powers off automatically when the button on the side isn't being pressed. Has about a 3 second calibration each time you use it.

USER TIPS:
1. Hold the stud finder properly and move it slowly in one direction to obtain the optimum scanning results.
2. Avoid placing your other hand, or any other part of your body on the surface being scanned, which will interfere with the performance of the scanner
3. Make sure that the surfaces you scan are flat and have been fully dried out.
4. Take care when working near the electrical wires and always turn off the power supply.
Even I was able to open the box and within five minutes find the middle of a stud. See picture. Absolutely great for hanging pictures and installing LED TV frames. I am excited it comes with additional modes to find deep studs, metal and even AC wires.
The Vivreal wall scanner is easy to use and does a decent job of locating studs. I like the lcd graphic display and especially the left and right arrows. It does seem to get confused by nearby objects such as wire coat hangers when scanning the back of a closet so clear the area. The AC wire warning function is a Miss Utility for drilling in walls and great to have. The metal detector not only finds metal studs but also the edges of ductwork. I wish we'd had this tool to use before mounting a kitchen range vent where a furnace air duct went up to the second floor. The Deep mode did not provide useful results in my house. I didn't rate Vivreal a 5 because the stud finding results aren't consistent, e.g. find a stud, scan for the next stud and it is found 13 inches away, go back to scan the first stud and it isn't found. Multiple scans are required to establish where studs are located. All in all, this tool is well worth the pice.
After trying another stud finder, and getting highly inconsistent results after multiple scan, I decided I needed something a bit more effective. When I received this product, I tested it out on the same walls that I was having trouble scanning in the past. This time I got consistent results every time, and a clear indication on where the center of the wood stud was behind the wall. So far, this product has met all my high expectations.
Tested all applications and all passed with flying colors. Quickly found studs and electrical thru paneling with extremely heavy texture. Worked thru Hardy Board (Deep Scan). Found studs thru 1/2" sheathing and 1/2"siding (Deep Scan). Exactly found metal, both electrical and plumbing. Impressive handy tool. My order arrived quickly and I am very pleased with this product. I really enjoy how there is an alarm and it actually states " center" when you get to the middle of the stud. It is extremely easy to use and the directions explained everything well enough to where I had no issues.
