I found that this drone flies great if you take the time to understand the controls and make sure that it's level before you turn it on. The drone finds its "balance" during the first few seconds that it has power. If it's leaning one way or the other during this time it will tend to wander. I also found that putting it in headless mode makes it easier to fly for newbies like myself. This drone is very durable and there are replacement parts available on Amazon that won't break the bank. Don't forget to order extra batteries. You will want them so that you can fly more than 10 minutes or so at a time. The first video I shot was upside down. It turns out that there is a "180 degrees" button in the app that needed clicked before recording video.
I'm a first time pilot, and many articles said this would be a great starter/ trainer for the price. Boy, this didn't disappoint!
Ease of Use- There is a learning curve. Started in the house to get the hang of it, took a couple hours, but really designed for outdoor use.
Durability- Crashed this thing into just about every wall in the house, and every bush in my front yard. No repairs needed. Very durable.
Camera- not the greatest, but it's $60 bucks! What do you expect? For what you get, takes some decent pics and videos. If you're a beginner like me, you'll likely take it and be happy.
Battery- You get about 10-15 minutes out of it. BUY THE EXTRA 4 PACK. for $16, it's a lot more flight time for your buck!
Range- Had a great time flying this in an open field until I went a little too high and far out... then my wife had a great time watching her husband running across the middle school field, chasing after this thing screaming every obscene word I could think of. Luckily, I ran it down and regained control enough to bring it back down. You can get about 100 yards (Football field) away... more or less. Consider what kind of shape you are in, and your sprinting capability you have if you decide to test the range beyond that.
Overall- This is an AWESOME drone/copter for the price. Having a great time with it, and really happy I bought it.
First time drone owner and I love it!
As a first timer, here are some of my thoughts:
Pros:
+ The drone was easy to put together
+ Has survived multiple crashes
+ Controls are simple (though that's probably the same across all drones, not sure)
+ FPV functionality was a piece of cake to get set up. When I read some of the reviews on the Android app, it sounded like it would be a pain, but my experience was great.
Cons:
- Instructions were...tough to read. Wasn't written by a native English speaker which is fine, but it definitely could have benefitted from a couple of reviews from a native Englisher.
- Goes along with the above, but the pictures were useless. They were black and white and were impossible to see. Looks like it was printed from my printer (most prints come out faded).
Worth noting that drones are really hard to fly. Definitely take some getting used to. I am getting better with it, and now that I don't accidentally crash into everything, I've noticed how smooth the controls are. As a beginner, I have really liked the drone.
Overall, I've been very happy with it so far. If any problems come up that would have been worth knowing before buying, I'll add them to my review.
Right out of the box the assembly was easy and straight forward. The little screwdriver provided helps with all the screws you need for the guards and the undercarriage. Legs snap right on.
After charging via the USB we were in business. Pairing with the controller was straight forward.
I've flown this in the back yard about 10 times now and had several crashes, but overall this has been great. Handling has been very responsive, and the trim helps it get fairly well balanced. It's not a piece of cake though, still requires some finessing of the controls to get it to do what you want. Only time I had to go inside was when it was a bit windy, but it even handled light rain fine. Broke one of the guards on the third flight after a full speed collision with a tree I was orbiting around, but it responded well to a bit of super glue and its been fine ever since.
The flips you can do are a crowd pleaser, but not much practical use aside from that. Make sure you get pretty high before attempting it though as you'll likely to lose about 2 meters upon completion of the loop. My first attempt went straight into the ground!
I didn't realise this came with a camera. That was a bit of fun. My son enjoyed watching where I was going on the phone. I don't think I'd use it to navigate though, it's a bit blurry and I doubt it would be worth taking shots or recording video on this.
Wish I got a bit longer on the drone battery though. I get about 15 minutes currently, and it's a 90 minute charge after. Thinking about picking up a second one. Considering getting some extra guards too.
Frustrating first drone experience. It took so long for the controller to pair with the drone that I only got to fly about 3 minutes before it crashed and that was that.
Second...I'm glad I bought extra batteries that came with a charger. The connections are tiny. I have big, thick hands and my fine motor skills aren't what they used to be (I'm 62). The instructions say "charge the battery first" so I did that. The red light on the charger cable (the red light is at the usb end) went out pretty quickly (30 minutes or so). I went to separate the battery from the charger cable and, whoopsy, out comes the wire from the connection that the battery plugs into. Great...so within 30 minutes I have destroyed the charging cable...and I thought I was being gentle. At this point I decided that I would never charge a battery while it was in the drone. Take the whole damn battery out, replace it or charge it, plug it into the drone connector cable, then put the battery in the drone.
Third: The manual is pretty tough to follow along. The Chinese need to hire someone that can write clear concise instructions. They reek, and thats putting it mildly. The instructions, as someone else succinctly put it...will not get you from point A to point B.
The manual does not tell you to move the left controller (the one that isn't spring loaded which controls propeller speed) to force pairing. Even doing that it still took over 5 minutes to pair the controller to the drone. All the blinking lights are confusing to a new user because they are codes. The signal that indicates it isn't paired is...two blinks....about 3 to 5 seonds...two blinks. When it is finally paired, the blinking green light on the controller will be solid. All I can say is....be patient...and when you no longer see the red light on the green/yellow/red light bar projected onto your working surface (its about 1" long and ½" wide), turn off the drone, wait 5 seconds and turn it on again. I had to to do this a few times. It was frustrating so be prepared.
Assembly: This is actually really easy but, the screws are really really tiny. I saw that and immediately moved my work surface from my desk to the kitchen counter and worked on a couple of white napkins. I suspect I dropped the screws about 10 different times. The napkins keep them from rolling to far. I have a tiny motorized hobby screwdriver that I got from Lowes. It was invaluable. I didn't have to use the screwdriver that came with the kit. The prop guards go on super easy (I used mini needlenose pliers to position stuff) and so do the landing struts. I put a drop of Super Glue on each strut attachment point. So far so good.
Pairing the camera: Took about 5 minutes and the instructions are easily understood...but read 'em two or three times anyway. Timing is critical. The camera will only pair with your phone when the red portion of the light bar I previously mentioned is flashing. Also, when the MJX C4005 FPV shows on your phones WiFi networks list ...press it real quick. I waited a few seconds and my phone started defaulting back to my home network and I had to start all over. Anyway, I got it working and the little camera is surprisingly good. I'm pretty happy with it. Neighbors dog might not be.
Flight:...Ahhhh finally. I am a total rookie. My first goal was to get the little beast to hover. Heh....I put it on the patio table and gradually engaged power...Holy Cow. My American gradual and their Chinese gradual are two different things. The little thing leaped twenty feet into the air and took off over my lawn. I instantly let go of everything...it crashed. It was fine. My grass is also nice and thick. Now I get "gradual". Took it back to the table and just barely touched the throttle. I then adjusted the trim switches (in this regard manual is accurate) until I could get it to hover a few inches above the table.
Conclusions: It's a fun little thing but the learning curve is pretty steep. I believe it will be an excellent learning tool for an adult who wants to take up drones as a hobby.
UPDATE: 8/25/2016. OK, I broke it on the second day of use. One of the prop guards broke. Didn't effect flight. Pretty easy fix and I'm up and flying again. I was contacted by OXA USA COM who is an Amazon retailer for this little guy. I have to admit that US retailers and customer service folks could learn a hell of a lot from these folks. They sent me batteries, rotors, rotor guards and a new engine...oh and a cable. Not only that but they over nighted it to me. I think these folks know what is going to break and have kits prepared for distribution. So...Alice (lol)...Thank You. Based on customer service alone I would change this to a 5 star rating. But now that I have the stuff, and an electric hobby screwdriver for those tiny screws, I'm happily playing with my drone again. Thank You so much. Rating changed to 5 stars.

This is the first drone we have purchased so we are beginners, first the drone Is light weight and comes with a battery and a charger, when you first get it I would recommend charging the battery for a couple of hours but be careful as these can catch fire if left on the charger well past the time as I have been told. It takes a little while to learn the controls and get off the ground, it's a little bit of a learning curve as anything is. The directions are included and very easy to understand, my 10 yr old even could follow them. They are written in a very self explanatory manner. This is small enough that can be flown in the house as well as outside. The app is easy to download and is good for android and apple phones. This will need to be done so the camera will work, the pics that the drone takes is well quality, may vary on your phone. I have an Apple iPhone 6splus and the pics were good.You will need wifi to sync the app to the drone. You are able to go sideways and roll as well as up and down. It also lights up. And storage is easy as it is rather small. We have spent countless hours with this product and enjoy it very much! We have 3 young children and they are able to control and play with it. For our first drone this has been a great one. It also has been recommended to us to register with the FCA
Drone was pretty simple to assemble and easy to fly out of the box. Had to try a few different apps off the manufacturer website but got the camera working.
Unfortunately, that's where the disappointment set in. Per the description and what's marked on the box, I was expecting the C4015 camera which provides 2.0MP 720P HD video. But what is actually installed on the drone is the lesser C4005 camera which only provides 0.3MP 480P video. As I bought this one specifically to take video of our new house, that was a pretty big miss.
One other minor inconcistency is that the description states the controller requires 3 AA batteries. It actually takes 4 batteries. Minor goof, but there nonetheless.
All that said, this is a decent toy for the price and I'll have some fun playing with it. But I am pretty disappointed in the lower quality camera and as a result likely won't buy this brand again.
UPDATE:
Adding some stars and more details based on the seller's responsiveness and proactive actions. After reading my review, the seller proactively reached out to me to assist. While the description of the X400 is still a bit unclear, they directed me to try this model instead with an actual 720P camera: WIFI FPV Version U818A Drone with 720P HD Camera DBPOWER Headless Mode Quadcopter with 2 Batteries Long Flying Time Drone for Beginners
The U818 model is definitely better, both in terms of camera and stability in-flight. Basically, the drone/quadcopter market is a get-what-you-pay-for place if there ever was one. For $70, the X400 is a great toy to mess around with, but the camera is more of a novelty than anything else. For $110, the U818 is a step up, but still solidly in the toy category - the video you get will be more recognizable, but certainly will not win any awards. Neither model has a "brain" to qualify as an actual autonomous drone, but they are fun to play with. These are not meant to compete with the DJI stuff out there, nor are they capable of doing so. They are also less than a quarter of the price of the cheapest DJI product.
Both of these models are great for kids who might quickly lose interest or crash it a lot, or people who are just getting into the drone world and trying to decide if they want to invest $500-$1000+ in something bigger and better down the road. But again, they are toys and not what you'd need if you need stable video, solid control, or any level of automation.
This is my first drone ever and it did not give me any difficulty. I picked this drone because it's affordable and I can use smartphone to control. The problem is that you must download the app from their website, app from google store won't work. The seller should have instructions about this because this is one of the most important factor to keep this drone affordable. I took off one star because I have to spend more time to get what I expected. The customer service is good, they wanted to replace a new one but that's not the problem. I broke 2 blade protectors but that's my learning. They wanted to send me those too even though I never ask for.
I recently decided to learn more about photography drones. Following the advice from many of the online training videos I wanted to buy a drone that I could use to train as a pilot, and also to experiment taking videos from the drone for an affordable price.
The MJX X400W FPV ended up being the perfect choice! I have completed 15 successful flights without a crash. Each one 7+ minutes on a freshly charged battery.
The product and FPV capability worked perfectly out of the box following the printed instructions included. I really appreciated that the small screwdriver was magnetic so that it made it easier to insert the small screws without losing them.
If you are interested, here's what I purchased and how I approached learning to fly:

- And I used my iPhone 7S+ for the FPV view on the controller. I liked the larger display that the plus provides. But an iPhone could work.
And here's how I approached learning to fly:
1. Begin by downloading a drone simulator called QuadcopterFX from the App Store. Spent a few hours with it. Works really nicely on an iPad if you have one.
2. Began flying lessons WITHOUT using FPV. First started doing takeoffs and landings. Then worked on hovering. Harder than you might think in the wind. Then worked on forward/back and left/right movements. Finally tried rotations and flying in a square pattern.
3. Experimented going much higher. This drone will go very high and when it is way up in the sky it can be hard to determine its orientation. I did not use headless mode, because I wanted to really learn to fly. A couple of times big winds came and I almost lost control. So be careful not to go so high you cannot see front/back clearly. At dusk it's a bit easier because the lights are visible. In the sunlight it can be more difficult.
4. Finally last night I had enough confidence I tried with FPV on. I recommend you begin recording your video before you take off. I found that if I took my eyes off of the drone to look at the screen I tended to lose control a little.
Needless to say, I strongly suggest you learn to fly in a location without too many dogs and people. They can tend to break your concentration!
I am delighted with this drone and would recommend it to anyone. It's big enough to really give you the experience you need to become a good pilot.
Now I just need to spend more time flying it before I purchase a higher-end photography drone.
I have been very happy with my purchase, of the MJX400 quad copter. The package arrived in one week and was well protected, in an oversized box. Everything needed, to start flying, was in the box, with the exception of AA batteries for the transmitter. The rotor guards and landing gear, mounting easily and all the necessary screws were in the appropriate accessory bags. The box included instructions, that were easy to follow and complete. I also recieved an email, after the packaged was delivered that had helpful links to the FAA drone regulations. My only previous done experience was with a Hubsan mini done. I found the MJX400 to be very stable and easy to fly and I had no problem downloading the MJX FPV app from the manufacturers site and pairing my Android phone with the drone for a FPV Camera view. Great price, for a great product.
