12" Cuisinel skillet.
This is a really good skillet. I have had a Lodge 12" for over 10 years and compared the two. You may have read that the Lodge comes with a pebbled surface which Lodge says will smooth out over time. In my experience that is true (see photo, Lodge is on the left). The Cuisinel also has a pebbly surface. I also have had 10" skillet from Westinghouse for about 3 years, that also is pebbly (still is) which does not adversely affect cooking performance or clean up. Complaints about pebbliness are misguided in my view. The Cuisinel feels a bit rough around the edges at first, like freshly cast, but after scrubbing mine with a cast iron chain mail cleaner thing, I don't notice the rough edges anymore. (I don't recall what the Lodge was like when new.) As far as performance goes, it works perfectly, just as well as the Lodge. It is flat on the bottom (my first Lodge was convex and I had to replace it to use it on a glass cooktop), and works well on an induction cooktop as well as gas. On the induction cooktop, the edges of the circular magnetic area get hot first, and with more time the heat radiates so that the whole surface is heated evenly. Cast iron is not a great conductor, so preheating at a more moderate temperature is important to give the heat a chance to disburse more evenly.
The instructions say to wash with dish soap once and reseason on arrival. I washed it and dried it but didn't reseason. I have not have a problem with anything sticking, but haven't tried the ultimate test: fried eggs. If you do choose to reseason, the best thing to do is remove the seasoning with spray on oven cleaner (caustic, so follow directions), and reseason with flax oil. Flax oil creates a much more durable coating than any other, per Cooks Illustrated, but you have to start with raw metal.
The pan weighs 7 lb 13.5 oz. The Lodge weighs 7 lb, 4 oz. The Cuisinel is a bit taller, 2 1/4" vs. 2 1/16" and the handle a bit wider.
It is a very nice cast iron skillet. It is a real plus that it comes with a lid (and silicone handle cover). A lid makes it much more convenient.
This skillet is perfect for what I needed! It’s a good size, comes preseasoned with easy care instructions, and I love that it came with a lid. Going to be tossing my old pans
Great product. Perfect size. Love the lid!

Bought this to use on our grill....
As soon as it warms up will try it.
Used it in oven for Orange, Corn bread Chicken, turned out Awesome!
Liked that it was easy to prepare it to use
This is the first cast iron skillet I've ever owned and it is a wonderful addition to my kitchen! It is easy to clean and foods really don't stick to it. It is very versatile in that it can be put in the oven if the dish you're cooking needs to be baked for a time. The silicone handle cover is a great addition-makes handling the pan much easier than trying to hold it with a potholder. The glass lid is great and lets you see how things are cooking. I highly recommend this skillet!
Love it. Deeper than I hoped for, which is even better. It came pre-seasoned and after cleaning it off for cooking, I immediately pan fried steaks. It worked beautifully. Clean up was a breeze. I immediately scrubbed then placed over the stovetop on a low heat setting to completely dry. A quick swab of fresh oil and its ready to go again. I love that it comes with a clear glass lid and a rubber grip so you don't burn your hands.
The significant other is a big fan of cast iron, so she liked this cast iron skillet before she even got it. The only surprise was the weight. We have other cast iron cookware, but this skillet is larger than our other cast iron cookware and, consequently, heavier.
Though the skillet was allegedly pre-seasoned, the significant other seasoned it before use. Indeed, she seasons cast iron after every cleaning, and adds additional oil during cooking. When it comes to cast iron, keeping the surface protected with a coating of oil is essential to minimize sticking during cooking.
Once seasoned, the significant other launched into cooking a Korean dish based on thinly sliced pork belly. The meat seared quickly and cooked thoroughly about as fast as she turned it over. She absolutely loves the lid, which prevented grease from splashing everywhere. She also loves the silicone handle since she usually has to use a pot holder for her other cast iron cookware.
Other than weight, the only issue the significant other has with this pan is that the bottom surface seems somewhat rough. Fortunately, we currently have a gas cook top. However, if we had a glass cook top, we would worry that the rough bottom might scratch the glass.
Our assessment of value is average to above average based on the price, the handle, and the lid. If the bottom of the skillet were smoother, we would probably consider the value to be above average.
We pondered whether we wanted to rate this skillet five stars or four stars. The significant other thought the glass lid and and the silicone handle were great additions to the pan and thought those features should drive the rating higher. On the other hand, the significant other was concerned about the rough bottom, since we plan to move to a home with a glass cook top. After a bit of analysis, the significant other decided that the rough bottom could be problematic for a future glass cook top, so she decided that the overall rating should be four stars, but a very high four stars.
Enjoy!
