I purchased the Greater Goods kitchen scale as my wife and I recently began living a healthier and cleaner lifestyle. I’ll say, for anyone looking at improving their life healthy eating is the first step, and to do so you NEED a good food scale.
After reviewing dozens of scales I purchased this one as the company seems to have a great product, which looks good, at a great price, and they’re a responsible company. I have a very modern kitchen and do not like clutter. This scale looks great whether I keep it on the counter or in a drawer. It’s sleek and slim, and multiple different measurements, and is very easy to use. I typically use the oz. or gram setting the most. For those that haven’t used a food scale before...it’s EASY! For example, if I’m making chicken tacos, I’ll first put the plate and two tortillas on the scale. Then I’ll zero it out. Then when I add my chicken I’ll know exactly how much I’m having without dirtying multiple bowls/plates. Then I zero it out again, and start adding cheese, zero it out again and add additional toppings. It’s easy to use and helps in calorie counting. Especially if you enter your food intake into an app (I use MyFitnessPal), it is amazing!
The first one I purchased stopped working shortly after receiving (kept showing no low battery and turning off, even after buying new batteries), but they company promptly shipped another. I rated a 4/5 for this reason, but will increase to 5/5 if this one holds up. It’s a good chance it was a one-off defect.
Thank you for reading and rating my review! Cheers to you and your new healthy lifestyle! :)
I've tried the all plastic version of this scale and it's definitely worth the upgrade to get steel. Frankly I don't really care what material the surface is made out of (as long as it's easy enough to keep clean). But the buttons on the steel scale are much better than the buttons on the plastic scale. It's a night and day difference in usability. The buttons on the plastic scale do not click. And that combined with the fact that the buttons are on the actual weighing surface make it difficult to tell if your input has been received and if the scale is zeroing properly. This one makes it very clear and it feels much nicer to use.
Aside from the much improved buttons, the SS top is easier to clean as well. This scale is nice and thin and it's easy to throw in a backpack. I wish it took AAA batteries instead of button cell, but I guess that's a tradeoff that comes with the slim size. Zero functionality works great as does unit switching. I personally think it's really dumb that a scale has a ml measurement (it's the exact same reading as grams and is meant to measure ml of water or something water based since water has a density of 1. It will not work accurately for oil or other liquids with different densities from water). So if I had any feedback, it would be that I'd like to see this take AAA and would like to see the ml measurement removed because it's kind of stupid.
I was hesitant about adding yet again another gadget to my kitchen, but as an avid cook I like to hunt for recipes in old books and I have also recently found, that many trendy vegan books have measurements in grams. Occasionally I also bake and many times books call ingredients by weight and Googling conversion quickly gets annoying.
The scale came in time and their packaging was very minimal, easy to open and 100% recyclable. I love that, as my city does not recycle styrofoam. The setup was easy and the instructions incredibly convenient. A quick minute video and all my questions were answered and it was ready to go! Best part? Not wrestling with "should keep or toss the instructions?!" The paperless feature is so ahead compared to other manufacturers, that I wish everyone would follow their model.
The scale is small, sleek, elegant and light, it's the perfect size to tuck it in the corner of a drawer or on top of my cook books. The display size is very much appreciated because I seem to misplace my kitchen reading glasses constantly. The industrial design is very appealing and modern, and the "zero" feature is amazing. It's just absolute perfection. Can't wait to use it to bake my weekly treats!
Looks great and has more features than my old scale, also seems to be more accurate. I can't believe how much slimmer it is compared to my old scale! This is great if you like to switch between different types of measurements for cooking. I like to weigh my smoothies out before I make them and the pitcher for my blender fits a lot better on this scale
Update: 3-2-19.
After 1 year, this scale is still efficient. I use it almost everyday to weigh foods. I am still happy with it.
I have been using this scale for 10 days. Its size is small and compact so it does not take much space in the cabinet. However, it is big enough to accommodate big bowls I have. The large dinner plate does not fit (if I put them I will not be able to see the display screen). This is not a big deal for me. I use to weigh food portions since I watch what I eat to limit caloric intake. Also, I use it to prepare desserts. It is accurate and I tested it with many kinds of food. It has a wide range of weight. It is sensitive for the majority of stuff. However, it did not feel a green tea bag which is 1oz weight. I am attaching photos of myself comparing butter weight on the package vs the scale. Overall, it is nice and handy for its price. It is useful I guess based on what purpose you need it for. You can easily shift between different units (pounds, grams, fluid ounce, and milliliters). The battery is included which is more convenient.

Digital Food Scales Digital Weight Grams and Ounces (Stainless Steel) by Greater Goods
The technology isn't overwhelming, but if you go to the website, you'll find that if you hold down the left button, it changes the automatic shut-off time from 2 minutes to 5 minutes. If it does shut off, it doesn't remember the last reading like the $50 OXO scale, but for $10, this is the cat's meow. It does what I need it to do, in ounces, grams, pounds/ounces, milliliters (accurate for water and other liquids within a small margin of error if their density is close to that of water). It does need to rest on a flat surface to give accurate and consistent readings, because the strain gauges are built into its four little "feet." I like the light weight (9 oz) of this scale. FWIW, it takes a button battery. I think the top is stainless steel, but it scratches easily (metal is softer than clay ceramic or glass). I haven't placed a hot saucepan on it, nor will I take that risk.
I dropped mine in water, but rescued it before it had a chance to soak. It acted funny until I unscrewed the back and toweled off the water. All back to normal. Even if it died, I'd replace with the same.
My wife and I have used a different brand kitchen scale for years which has worked great, but it has a raised platform which has always taken up too much space in our limited kitchen storage space. This scale’s ultra slim design has made storage much easier. Also, compared to our old scale, the completely flat surface is much easier to clean. There is no raised platform to try and work under if a spill happens. The display is larger than our old scale and can be seen at any angle (our old scale you need to be at about a 45 degree angle). The only thing I would recommend while using a flat surface scale with a zeroed out container on top, is that you use a bowl instead of a plate. We have found that a plate tends to cover the display, but we have no problem with a bowl.
I wanted something small and inexpensive and was willing to forego the bells and whistles of more expensive scales. This is actually more than enough. It has all the weight measurements I would use. It is not large which makes it great to leave on the counter or easy to slip into a drawer. The size does limit some things that you may want to weigh, but you can easily put most foods into a different container to weigh using this scale. It zeroes quickly and it is accurate. The stainless color matches other stainless appliances for the most part so I leave mine out. It doesn't get sparkling clean by just wiping it off with a paper towel, but it's not very noticeable. Some Windex does the trick if you want it to shine. I have not had any issue with the battery life at this point, but I turn it off when I'm not using it. I'm happy with this purchase and would recommend it.
great scale and takes up very little space. Works spot on and it’s really easy to clean. We have another scale, see photo, and it seems to attract a lot of dust and grease and is a pain to keep clean. This scale is flat and wipes clean really easily and looks nice in the kitchen. I’ve weighed several things and this scale works great. If you’re looking for a low profile kitchen scale, this is it!
The cons: The buttons/controls are on the scale itself. When pressing them the scale registers the amount of your pressure. You may think no biggie because when you lift your finger it goes back to the right weight- sometimes it does. Sometimes it’s “close”. If close is okay with you then great! Also, you cannot use a big bowl or dinner plate on it because you can’t see the read out. The biggest con for me is the inaccuracy of the scale itself. It seems to be unbalanced. Moving the same item around registers different weights. You may think you don’t move things around so what does it matter? I’ll give 2 examples: 1) Big bowl on the scale. If you add something to one side of the bowl it’s one weight. If you add same thing to the other side or middle etc., it’s a different weight. 2) Weigh your item in a bowl and then remove bowl to add an item and you may not put it down in the exact same spot.
All this being said, the scale is inexpensive and is absolutely worth what I paid for it. Knowing these pros and cons I will still use it but I would not recommend it for someone counting precious macros unless you’re okay with “close” weights.
