As a student of Mathematics, I spend a great amount of time taking notes, doing exercises, writing proofs, etc, and it always breaks my heart to see my fellow brethren digging into the dark recesses of their backpacks only to pull out cheap, plastic mechanical pencils, or worse, chewed out Ticonderogas!
Having witnessed this travesty far too long, I one day began my Luciferian plan to plant the seeds nonconformism among the easily corrupted. It began slowly: "feel the weight of this thing", and "you know why you keep losing pencils? Cause you don't care about them. If you had a nice one however..."
Soon, I followed with more aggressive prodding: "How can you say you care about the quality of your work when you write with disposable junk? By the transitive property, your work is junk too!", and "you might as well write out your proofs in crayon!" Then, shame: "you write with 0.5mm? Why? Does 0.7mm hurt your dainty, delicate man-hands?"
Finally, an appeal to our collective struggle: "Brothers, these are the tools of our trade, our weapons in the fight against innumeracy and convolutions! You deserve better!"
By the time my work was done, I had enlisted five members into the cause, and they are now all straight A students. True story.

***** UPDATE******
The tip of this pencil is sharp enough to poke holes in bouncy castles. Do not have in your pocket if you plan to go into bouncy castles! Also, said tip is perfect for popping animal balloons at kids parties.

***** UPDATE 2.0******
DON'T buy this pencil if you are 'Edward Scissor Hands' or a frustrated drummer and cannot hold a finely crafted tool in your hands for more than two seconds without dropping it. Or if you are a business major. Buy a fidget spinner instead.
Yes, the tip will bend if you drop it, and glass will break too...

A pencil so good....I bought it 3 times.

So all the positive reviews about this pencil are on point. And all the reviews that explain how FRAGILE the tip is if YOU DROP IT.

I bought the first one to use Solely for writing down appointments into the Appointment book for our Business....NO PENS in the APP book..Ever.
It was a real treat to use a nice quality pencil for once, instead of cheapo plastic junk.

So these pencils are ALL the rave until you drop it....Even just once...its toast! The tip bends or breaks off completely
You have to be extremely careful to just not drop it at all, You can't.

Bought one for my son who is an engineer. He loves it! Looks impressive and feels good in your hand.

**This is another addition to my original review. I just ordered and received another Rotring 600 0.7 mm for $13.99, and a Rotring 600 0.5 mm for $16.85. The first one I purchased for my son was $30, so I thought I'd get both since it was such a deal. I thought I was getting a great deal until my order arrived. When the two arrived, all I got was an empty sleeve for the 0.5 one! There was nothing in it. I don't understand how that mistake was made, as it is immediately obvious just by the weight each one (to Amazon's credit, they are replacing it). Also, I noticed right away that the packaging was different. The first one came in a sturdy triangle-shaped box that folds in 3D and tucks into itself. These came in flimsy sleeves, where the pen just slides out. Upon further inspection, I noticed Japanese writing on the box. In reading other forums, it seems the Rotrings made in Japan and Russia are inferior to the ones from Germany. Some even said the weight was different. I've ordered one for $33 from Jetpen that looks like packaging is like the original one I purchased from Amazon for my son, and when it comes I will compare them to see if they are different. If they are, I will be very disappointed. There is no mention of this being manufactured elsewhere in the description that Amazon provided. I think they should warn people. No wonder it was so much cheaper! This is the first purchase I've ever been disappointed in from Amazon.

I'm currently an engineering major at college, so no ordinary pencil will do. Some friends of mine have set out on the quest to find the perfect pencil. As far as build quality and overall feel goes, this pencil takes the cake. The only thing that would make this pencil better would be a tip that rotates the lead as you write. The highest model Kuru Toga does this, but it sacrifices some of the build quality to lower the price. Compared to other rOtrings, I believe the 600 model is the overall best. The 500 has a plastic body that feels much more like a generic pencil. The 800 model, on the other hand, is much more expensive than the 600, and it is only slightly better. The 800 has a retractable, gold tip, which is nice, but hardly worth the spike in price. I would sooner buy a second 600 than one 800.

Over the years since the peak of mechanical pencil usage (late 1990's), the makers of these writing instruments were faced with cut budgets and having to find was to reduce costs. That often came at the sacrifice of quality in materials and features. Also, a lot of metal substituted for plastic. In the case of the rOtring 600, there hasn't been a notable increase in plastic used internally. And given how long lived the older versions are with some plastic internal parts, rOtring has proven out that it's nothing to worry about.

This is a very reasonably priced pencil when you find it on sale. $15 is good, but sometimes you can get it for nearly $10 (a terrific buy). You really can't go wrong. Every mechanical pencil collection should have at least one rOtring 600!

Nice metal construction, very satisfying to hold with the heavy weight.

Functions flawlessly. It's a pencil.

It's just not comfortable for all day writing, the knurling on the grips is rough and the hexagonal shape looks cool, but I would've preferred something more round.

I prefer the zebra m701 stainless steel pencil. It's a lot cheaper, similar quality, and most.importabtly it is very comfortable (while still feeling tough and rugged).

The rotring is obviously more of a drafting pencil, not meant for writing letters or taking notes. Since I finished school (engineering), there is not much practical use for this tool, as drawings requiring any precision are just done on a computer.

I feel like I could dispatch zombies with this pencil. I'm pretty sure the solid metal body would go straight through their putrescent skulls if I could only avoid getting bitten while in incisor range.

Fortunately, I seldom have to kill zombies on my job, but I do take notes and sketch and impress my boss with this wonderful piece of engineering. This replaces a beloved Caran d'Ache mechanical pencil I used for years that eventually went south. Even the Swiss pencil was plastic. Sleek and modern to be sure, but this pencil has heft. And it works. And maybe, just maybe someday it might save you from a zombie. All you've got to worry about now is having spare lead and eraser.

OK., you can't tell in the photos, but the balance is really stunning. The pencil feels so natural in the hand and the metal body gives a very confident feel. The Knurl is superb. Just keep your eyes on this because everyone will want to steal it. It feels like a professional precision device. 0,7mm is the right diameter to avoid breaking lead too often. It looks and feels like a very expensive tool. It is made in Japan but looks and feels Teutonic.

Best pencil I have ever owned. Use this one at work. I will probably buy another to keep at my house.
It's all metal so it's obviously on the heavier side, but a heavier weighted pencil falls under my personal preference. So for me, the weight is amazing/flawless. Well made and not cheap. If I ever lose this I will be very sad and will instantly buy another.

I own a Rotring rapid pro as well as the 600 (.7mm). Even though the 600 doesn't have a retractable lead sleeve I like the overall feel of the 600 better. The grip is noticeably thicker and I like hexagonal shape is more prominent as well. I like the texture of the grip better as well.

The most important reason I like the 600 better than the Rapid Pro, is that the pencil doesn't move at all. When I write or grip the Rapid Pro hard the insides shake a little. It is almost not noticeable but I can feel it jiggle ever so slightly. The 600 feels solid. I wish I got it in .5mm instead of .7 because it has been working out so well.
