I love playing with DMR radios. This little thing is fun! It connected to my PC instantly and was very easy to program. The CPS program resembles the software from other Radioddity radios and has the same features as many higher end radios. It has a nice wide display which shows more characters than my other radios. This means I don't have to abbreviate my channel names as much.

I use the radio on a local repeater and on my OpenSpot. I've received good signal reports on both digital and analog.

I have a few other Baofeng radios. I really like the small size because I can put it in my vest or shirt pocket comfortably.

I wasn't sure what to expect from a dual-band DMR radio that cost only $75, but I was pleasantly surprised. The radio has some quirks, but for the most part it works very well.

In the box are the usual accessories. A free driverless programming cable is also included. A printed manual is not. You can download the manual and free software from Radioddity's website. The popular CHIRP programming software does not support this radio at this time, but the free software from Radioddity isn't bad and gets the job done. Thankfully the RD-5R's firmware is upgradable too. My radio came with firmware v2.00.06. A newer version was available on the website along with the v1.0.0.2 software. This is where encountered the first quirk with this radio. The updater program is not in English. Fortunately, there is a doc in English explaining how to update the firmware. The process is very simple and takes a few seconds. After updating, my radio has firmware v2.00.09.

Once I updated the radio, installed the programming software, and charged the battery fully, I spent about 30 minutes figuring out some more quirks within the software. Most of them aren't really the fault of Baofeng. There is just no standardization for DMR Codeplugs. Almost every radio and its software do things differently. After messing around with the software and some trial and error, I managed to create my own Codeplug from scratch. From start to finish, I was on the air in about 2 hours. Unfortunately there aren't any VHF DMR systems in my area yet, so I tested on a couple UHF systems. At first I just tested the Parrot TG. I thought the audio was about as good as can be expected. It was clear. The RX audio on the RD-5R's internal speaker is OK. It's a little "tinny", but acceptable. I had a couple of conversations with the locals. All of them said my audio was very good, and they were quite surprised when I told them what radio I was using, and what I paid for it. I've had the radio on all day, and so far the battery has shown no signs of giving up yet. So I'd say battery life is excellent. The included antenna is nothing special, but it's an upgrade to the antenna that came with the original UV-5R. This one is thin and flexible.

All in all, I'm very impressed with the RD-5R. Is it a Motorola? No, of course not. The radio does do its job though, and it does it well at a price almost anyone can afford. It does take some patience, and like every DMR radio I own, it has a learning curve. In the end, I'm glad I purchased it. It's an excellent low cost addition to my radio collection.

The radio was very easy to set up using the software i found on the Radioddity website. I did have to manually copy the entire code plug because this is a new radio and there were none available. I used a code plug from the Radioddity GD-77 and had to open that in the software for that radio. It was time consuming to copy all the fields, however i figured it out.
The reason I am giving it only 4 stars is because it's impossible to add UHF/VHF frequencies and save them to the radio on the fly. It must be done with the code plug software.
However, there are NO drivers needed to connect the radio to the computer with the supplied USB data transfer cable. Once you figure out that you can simply connect the radio, turn it on and upload the code plug with no further steps required, it was a breeze.
The radio has excellent sound and i was told by many hams that i sounded like i was in the room next to them. I do not use an external mic with this device.
If you are looking for a budget DMR dual band radio, this is definitely the one for you! I get around 1% packet loss or better using the DMR repeater that's about 7 air miles from my QTH.
Good luck and enjoy this radio!!

I got a couple of these radios from Amazon and I got two that were damaged. Both were most likely returns. It's no secret that BaoFeng radios are not the highest "quality controlled" radios.

The problems come in when people return radios to Amazon and Amazon does not properly inspect the items. I've accidentally returned wrong items to Amazon and never heard a word about it. Got my refund no problem. Called Amazon to let them know to make it rite and they never got back to me.

Long story short. It's a great radio if you get a good one. Some come with buttons that have the "abc" keys for text messages and some come with keypads like the original uv-5r. Luck of the draw.

In my picture I have the Nagoya 8in high gain whip antenna and the bl-5l battery which I suggest you get from the BaoFeng tech website because there are 100+ fakes out there and people buying originals and returning fakes on Amazon.

Radioddity did send me two new radios directly from China to make up for the two bad ones I received.

This radio is a fantastic first Dual Band Digital/Analog radio. It takes a bit of learning, and cussing, and re-learning to program using the included free software, but once you understand what a group is, and a receive group, and a contact, and on and on, it works perfectly. Very clean audio in DMR mode. Analog audio is good. Range is good. Size is rather small, but that's not a bad thing for a portable. I recommend joining the RD-5R Facebook group, as they have many code plugs already created for this radio. If you're looking for a radio that has all the bells and whistles, this ain't it. If you want a beginners radio that actually teaches you the basics, and that works for a low price, you've come to the right place. Welcome to DMR!

What a difference. Got a replacement radio. This one does not get hot during charging and I am able to program it. Still working on program. I have been getting great help from Radioddity tech support. I get answers within 24 hours. Very pleased with it now. This is my first DMR radio so it is a learning experience for me. Would not hesitate to buy another one of their products.

I received the RD-5R as a review item. I am very excited that Baofeng is finally putting out a DMR dual band radio. The partnership between Baofeng and Radioddity is also an exciting development.

Like most Baofeng radios, this radio is compatible with the UV-5R accessories. This is a definite plus. Additionally, as a dual band (2m/70 cm) radio, it allows for the use of DMR repeaters in both bands.

One thing I very much like about the RD-5R is that switching between DMR and analog repeaters is seamless, and programming analog repeaters is far easier than on other DMR radios I have used.

Unlike most (if not all) Baofeng radios, this radio is firmware upgradeable, allowing for future developments in the firmware.

The one criticism I have of this radio is that one cannot load the DMR user database to the radio. One of the features of other DMR radios that I greatly appreciate is the ability to have the radio convert the DMR user IDs to call signs, names, and locations. I am hoping that a future revision of this radio will include this feature.

I'm pleasantly surprised by this little radio. I had gotten the Radioddity GD-77 previously and was looking for an even smaller DMR radio to carry around (and share with the other hams in the house). I'm happy with the radio, especially for the price. There were a few early issues with the firmware the radio came with, but as other reviewers also noted the updated firmware (free download) fixed the problems I've had. Sound is good considering the size of the radio and speaker. Programming was relatively straightforward and, while my DMR use was limited to use with a hotspot, the radio worked well. Overall I'm very happy with this little radio.

Great little DMR Tier II HT !
There is a little bit of a learning curve with DMR versus regular analog, but it’s easily overcome. The sound quality with DMR is amazing!!!
I was able to export channels from my other DMR HT and import them into this radio. I’m sure full code plugs will be available soon.

So far I really like the radio. There is a steep learning curve for the programming if you are new to DMR. I am using it on analog channels at the moments as there are no DMR repeaters in my area. I am hoping to remedy this with a hotspot. Once i am able to fully test the digital side i will update my review but for now i am pleased.
