So overall, this is a very solid laptop for the price, it offers a lot of bang for it's buck. If you're looking for a good mid-level laptop for on the go gaming, this is most definitely the choice for you. The laptop doesn't come with a lot of bloatware (actually there is virtually none, which was very refreshing to see), and you get a lot of power from easy overclocking of the CPU. The MSI Dragon Center is great for clocking your CPU speed to exactly what you need it at, so you can go from gaming to relaxing with a quick click of a button. What surprised me the most was how light it is, this laptop is not beefy at all and doesn't feel bulky when sitting on my lap. Having a gaming laptop that I can rest on the couch or even my lap is wonderful.
There's only two cons that I have with this, the fact that the out of box partitioning is weird and that this laptop will act very differently when being run off of the battery and not plugged in. Let's start with the partitioning. This laptop splits it's massive HDD into two partitions that are roughly the same size, which means that you'll end up having to split your installed programs across two drives. Really, that's a pain. So you go to change the partition, right? However, what you find is that there is a little "recovery" partition (that's only 20mb, it's not recovering anything) that is sitting right in between the two big partitions, meaning you won't be able to decrease the partition of one and add it to the other. You're going to need to go into the command line and enter in some commands to get rid of that little partition before you can get the massive block of drive space that you really should have. Not a huge issue, just a pain. Okay second thing, when this laptop isn't plugged in, you're going to notice that the CPU is going to decrease it's speed drastically and everything is going to slow down. Not a huge thing, most gaming laptops become different beasts when they are plugged in, it's just something to note that the level of change is drastic here.
Overall, great laptop once you get past the two small cons!
I love this laptop! So many functions for gamers. I got the 8th gen i5, but honestly it's still better than the 7th gen i7. I was a bit concerned about the 5400rpm 1TB drive, but the Optane totally takes care of the data transfer lag! Add in a heat flush button, awesome styling, and perfectly placed buttons and this thing rocks. I can play every game I've wanted to and almost all of them on full settings. It's light and durable and has enough inputs to go with anything. Best laptop I've had in a decade!
I'll be brief. This is my first Amazon review. I bought this computer primarily for work, because I hate slow machines, and because I also occasionally play games. My 5/6 year old Lenovo Yoga couldn't run Ori and the Blind Forest and I had given up on enjoying any of my games. This laptop runs Ori and Okami and Hollow Knight and Skyrim and the Witcher 3 and pretty much everything I love to play. Now I will say, I came from console so I wasn't chasing 60fps. I am happy playing at 30 or higher. For it's cost I get great performance. If I felt it was important I would have bought the next thing up with a 1060 GTX to get better framerates on newer games (60+ on PUBG and Fortnite).
As far as using it for work, it's a blissful dream. It loads fast and launches fast. No more waiting as the computer mentally stalls. At any time I can open it up, jump into my work, and immediately finish what I'm doing and move on.
My favorite purchase so far.
I gotta tell you, i had my doubts on this computer going into it but i have never been more wrong. The computer is lightning fast with the 8th gen 15 (runs faster that a 7th gen i7) and after getting all the updated completed, this thing runs super smooth.
This is definitely a great budget gaming laptop and amazing workstation laptop for those of you that want the best of both worlds. Strongly recommend the 8th gen i5 version of this computer! It looks super nice too!
I was looking to upgrade my old HP laptop that was about 10 years old (yes I know) but hey it had a good life. Well a lot has changed in that time and my use for a lap top has changed too. I wanted a pc that I could use for every day tasks and game. I did my research and after my boyfriend built his computer with MSI parts and seeing how amazing and solid his build was. I compared MSI lap tops and HPs. MSI definitely took the win with the specs and the price points. Boots up and runs games and everyday task like smooth jazz. Highly recommended!!!

Description
MSI 15.6" Performance Gaming Laptop i5-8300H GTX 1050Ti 4G 8GB 16GB Intel OPTANE MEMORY + 1TB HDD Win 10
I bought this product a couple days after I bought a cheaper model because I wanted a backlit keyboard, better build quality, and better performance. I'm happy to say I got all 3! The cheap plastic on the other laptop was a fingerprint/oil magnet, and while you can spot the fingerprints on this model, they are much harder to see and wipe away easily with a microfiber cloth. The 1050Ti provides a significance performance improvement in World of Warcraft(the only game I've tried on the system) and while it does have a standard HDD, the Optane really makes load times match that of an SSD(no exaggeration). I've only had 1 issue with this laptop in the 2 weeks that I've had it and that is that the WiFi card just crapped out randomly. It stopped working for about a day and then randomly started working again. I use this laptop mainly as an output to my tv so I haven't used the keyboard too much, but I was very happy with it and the screen from the small amount of time using both. The HDMI output works well but I would recommend unhooking it before you shut down your system, as I got an error where my machine no longer recognized my internal display and I had to wipe the graphics drivers and reinstall. Very happy with the purchase, only taking off a star for the Wifi Card error and the graphics driver problem, but both of those could be specific to me.
I bought this and the Acer Triton 500 2060 version. The triton had the best case and cost more, but all three gamers in my house opted for the msi and we returned the triton and bought two more msi 8se with 2060s. I should say the GV 8se is identical in form and specs to the the gl63 8se, however the hd on the GV is partitioned as one drive, whereas the GL we got had the HD partitioned into two drives with a hidden recovery partition between the drives, which is just terrible. So get the GV version if you can.
I have done a ton of research and I think this is the best rtx 2060 15 inch lappy our there. I have been gaming hard on this thing for a month now, and I absolutely love it.
I've been through so many laptops and desktops over the years because of both the work I do and the video games I play. Throw in the fact I'm a the type of woman who simply has to have the newest gadgets and tech gear to suffice my workload and my gaming addiction, it's just inevitable that being in the tech industry can be an expensive profession and hobby. The last laptop I had was a 17" desktop gaming alternative, so it was huge and heavy, so much in fact I actually had to have my husband carry it for me into my meetings or gaming tournaments. That said, when my last computer crashed on me, I needed something faster and better, but not necessarily bigger. I wanted slim, light weight, fast and graphics intense (for both presentation displays and gaming needs), but storage wasn't a concern because I had an external harddrive, SD card, and scan stick for backups. I also wanted something reliable, a laptop that stood up to it's name in the industry, and one that has a reputation for great customer service. There were two big names I turned too, but alas I went with this MSI because it had everything I NEEDED (albeit not everything I wanted), along with the reputation, and it fit within my budget. So far it's been pretty awesome for me. I can open up several photo imaging and video software programs along with several files, office programs, and still have Mass Effect or Fallout running in the background on heavy graphics, while switching between social media and emails without any delays. The best part about it, is that I can finally lift this bad boy up without straining my back and it looks cool enough to bring to LAN parties or tournaments while also holding a rather professional appeal for my business meetings. So far, so good. You made me one happy geek girl MSI!
I'm really pleased with this new laptop. It is the same size as an older MSI laptop (5 years old) I recently retired and there are a many pluses and just a few drawbacks. The lighted keyboard is very cool and the action on the keys is pretty good. It is full size which is something that I have to have. I like that I can use it in a dimly lit room and still see where my fingers are positioned and where seldom used keys are. I do some light weight gaming mostly sim type single player and the speed and graphics are slightly better than my old model and the cooling system is much more efficient. I will however be looking to upgrade the RAM to 16G, which is simple and fairly inexpensive. The DVD/CD drive has been deleted in this model and consequently it is much lighter, but I miss having the ability to play my favorite DVDs/CD's. I will probably check out external players for size and weight and see if it is a practical solution. It would have been nice to have a couple more USB outlets. The battery life is pretty decent, but I don't game on it while on battery, so I can't say whether that is a plus or not.
One of the main things I'm disappointed in is the rear mounted speakers. My old laptop had two decently powerful speakers on the top corners above the keyboard. Family members mentioned how great the sound quality and volume were for a laptop. This model has less powerful speakers with less depth and range and being rear mounted, the sound is directed away from you. Seems like a pretty odd design decision. Since the sound quality is so poor, I use either wired speakers or a small portable bluetooth speaker. I will probably be buying a bluetooth sound system in the future, so that issue is addressed at least when I am at home. Otherwise I'm stuck using headphones if I want to hear.
Built super tough. Metal construction sensitive to collecting fingerprints though so will be wiping down often.
Contrary to what you see in the community answers, this laptop version of the 1050 TI graphics card DOES NOT support Oculus Rift and you need to go to the next level MSI machine with at least 1060.
I bought this for VR and based on the answers from the community. Since I opened the box and installed software such as Oculus, the return policies made it cost prohibitive to return it. Ended up giving it to one of my gamer Kids (great for him, me? not so much).
Still, a great little gaming laptop if you don't plan on using it for VR and well worth the money!
