This kit is very well made with all components neatly and safely packaged.
The included PDF files for assembly, construction and programming are very well written and illustrated.
There are multiple provided Arduino programs to highlight the use of one or any of the included sensors provided with the kit. the construction was simple and fun with no required soldering. The kit includes a custom UNO shield which is used to aggregate all of the wiring for the sensors and motor control signals, very slick and easy to follow.
In our own rush to get the project together on time, we choose to utilize one of the ready-made programs which makes the car drive along and track a black line of electrical tape on the floor. This worked great and was a major hit at the non-competitive science fair. However the kit also provides detail which allows the hobbyist to continue their exploration and customize the programs which serve as a starter for endless fun and learning.
I am an Electronic Engineer and Computer Scientist who has studied Electronics , Computer Science and Robotics for nearly 30 years. I am also a hobbyist who enjoys toying with Arduino / Pi and other electronic hobbyist items. This kit is great for a beginner to learn the basics of robotics and electronic / mechanical engineering and computer science.
I bought this car robot for my 5 years old son that loves assembling robots. It is a great product and, even if I don't have a CD drive on my computer, I was able to download easily all material fro the webpage as well as the Arduino program.
Even if my son is young to start programming he was able to easily use the robot with the pre-installed functions.
It is a great product for kids that are interested in robotics. Our next step will be to add more sensors and I will start teaching my son how to program the robot.
We had a problem and the customer service was very helpful answering to my questions.
I'm very satisfied and I recommend to buy this product!!!
Came with all necessary parts - just don't lose any because you won't find extras. Quality parts and thick plastic chassis to attach the electronics to. Took me about 1.5 hours to put together. You are able to add on to this car with additional peripherals in order to make it more engaging.
When placing the sonar onto the motor, you will probably need to reset it's positioning once you run it in autonomous mode, so don't torque down the screw that holds it onto the servo motor.
Overall, fun to build and helps give a platform to learn a bit of coding on the Arduino.
This was a surprisingly high quality kit. The mechanical parts (nuts, bolts, etc.) for each subsystem were packaged separately, and clearly labeled. The instructions didn't have a lot of words, but they had good pictures for every step. It even came with small screwdrivers. It was straightforward to assemble. The shield has the GPIO pins broken out to JST-style connectors, which are easy to plug in to the other components; they are also broken out (with ground and power) to male header pins, in case you want to experiment with using them for other purposes.
I don't have a CD drive, so I downloaded the content from their web site. It has the functionality broken down to several lessons, in several languages. They include lots of sketches showing how the various features work, building up to more complex functionality. The Uno clone that comes with the kit comes with the complete functionality pre-installed, so you can try it out right after assembling the car.
This kit is appropriate for people with little experience with electronics or hardware, but who are interested in learning. There is lots of opportunity to experiment with the software.
This is quite possibly the best electronics STEM kit for kids to understand how things are assembled and how computers and robots work with programming
The assembly is relatively easy. Everything you need is in the box including tools. Theres six chapters on CD pdf you can print out for reference. That said assembly is about 2 hours. Thats half the fun though. My only cavaet is there are extremely small nuts and bolts/screws. I think some of them were m1 which as 1mm across. If you are ham fisted on impatient you might want to get tools designed to help working with small parts. Luckily they pack extras for the really small parts. This is a thoughtful add.
This kit is both more flexible, useful, and cheaper than most other robot STEM kits. Theres a bevy of sensors (drawn line, ultrasonic distance) and communication ports (infrared, wifi and usb) A real bargain over all.
That said i tecommend this kit for kids 10 be and over with adult supervision or 14 or older to assemble by themselves and program.

It's a great smart car that you'll find in plenty of "Top Arduino Smart Cars" lists. Assembly was about an hour and a half for me; all the tools you'll need are included, along with instructions and pre-made programs on the CD it comes with. Make sure to tighten everything as much as you can while building, as it can be very awkward to later on when all of the screws start coming loose. In terms of coding, be careful when using the delay() function as a means of timing movement, because the charge level of the batteries affects the voltage to the servos, and will mess up your timings when the batteries get low/are recharged. Otherwise, a great product overall. Oh yeah, and the customer support was really excellent.
I spend hours goin back and forth between YouTube and instaction trying to figure something up and days learning how to debug my assembly. However, all that time was fun and rewarding since I was working with my kids and learning how to diagnosis and approach the issue at hand. Looking back to my issues with this toy, the problem was that I did not pay attention to some details. I recommend this toy for this price tag. Great gift option as well.
I bought this for my 11 year old who has expressed interest in building something and programming. The robot was extremely easy to build for her, I just helped if she couldn’t figure out something but for the most part both my 6 & 11 year old did it by themselves.
We haven’t played around with the coding, but it comes with a remote that allows you to move it and some other functions.
From what I read, you can upgrade these, which we plan on doing in the future.
This is an unbelievable robot. Wish they had stuff like this in the 80's . The hardest part for me was letting my daughters do all the work . Spent 1.5 hours building the robot (so much fun watching). The excitement in my daughters eyes when they turned the on switch on was priceless. I have been programming arduino's for a while which gives me an edge on getting the programming going . Will write a quick tutorial for amazon shortly !
My nieces are 9 and 11. I purchased 2 units and we build them together. At the end of the first day we had learned mechanical build and uploaded the sample lesson programs from the Arduino Software to the control board. Over time we will learn to code. So far the kids love them and i'm going to buy myself one so I can learn a bit more before I go back to help them. Thanks!
