I completed this project together with my 8-year-old. I did most of the work, but an average 10-year-old could probably do this project on their own with minimal supervision. The instructions are pretty easily understandable (good accompanying diagrams). We completed the project in less than 30 minutes. You'll need a smaller-sized, Phillips-head ("+" or "x" shaped) screwdriver to complete the project. You'll also need a battery. Extra felt-tip markers, an extra battery, plenty of drawing paper, and a baking (cookie) sheet are also helpful once you're ready to doodle. To change the drawing pattern, simply adjust the legs between drawings.

Even though this was for my 8-year-old, other children from 4 years up to 12 years old would probably enjoy this project. The project may be too simplistic for young people older than 12 years old.

This isn't going to keep them occupied for hours and hours. Once you've completed the project, the actual drawing will keep children engaged for about 15-30 minutes before they lose interest. However, my children still enjoy pulling the robot out from time to time to do more doodling.

Overall, this is a worthwhile return on the investment considering I paid less than $20 and spent less than 30 minutes on the actual build. Here's a link to our YouTube video: [...]

Here are a couple of other 4M robot projects that we have enjoyed working on together:
4M Table Top Robot
4M Smart Robot

Was not sure how many stars to go with on this one. Reason being, the instructions have an error and there was a missing wire. That being said, I oddly decided on 5 stars. The error and missing wire made for a fun learning experience for my son. He learned to trouble shoot, that reversing the positive and negative wires causes the motor to run in the opposite direction, to improvise, and that even “professionals” make mistakes! It works great, was fun to assemble. Great STEM Project. My son loves it.

My kids love this robot. It is quite simple, a vibrating three legged bot with its legs being markers. Assembly was easy and took ten minutes with a small screwdriver. Requires one AA battery (not included).

I've purchased a few of these for my students to build. Students that built this loved the finished product, and enjoyed showing others what it could do. It wasn't as difficult for them to follow the instructions to this one as it was for some of the other robots.

Great little project for a learning boy. Does require some fine motor skills (holding a bolt with one hand, tightening a screw with the other). Overall my 8 year old son really likes it.

Use an a flat, Non carpeted surface.
We have managed to make it work with colored pencils or some thin markers.

4 out of 5 only because we had to finagle some things around to make it work because one of the screws was stripped. It did keep my eight year old nephew busy for quite some time and he was very interested in completing the project. You will need a set of teeny tiny screwdrivers.

It's pretty cool and does exactly what is says... doodles messy circles. The only thing I wasn't expecting is the sound of the motor. It is a lot louder than I was expecting! It's not deafening by any means, but I can see that it would be an annoyance to some people.

I bought this as a gift for my 9 year old nephew who likes to tinker. He put it together without any problems except he needed a small screwdriver shuck he didn’t have (too bad it’s not included in the kit.) He still enjoys playing with it a few months later.

Easy to build for an 8 yo with a little help. You're going to need a big sheet of paper to really let it work, but it's really neat. Draws in kind of a dotted line not a solid one, but still very cool. Easily holds other standard sized markers as well.

Works as described and my son enjoyed putting it together, but never picked it up again.
