Mostly for indoors, but can be operated outside under low wind conditions, and best in open fields not near trees. I’d consider this drone as a good first introduction to using a drone and/or as a plaything for kids 8 to 80.
Unboxing one finds the drone, the controller, USB-A charging cable, four spare propellers, manual, and a screwdriver for opening the battery compartment of the controller. The battery in the drone is not removable so you’ll get about five minutes of fly time before you take a 30 minute or so break to recharge.
The version of the manual that came with my drone was sometimes difficult to understand as it clearly was written by someone for whom English was not their first language. There is a much better version of the manual online.
Startup steps include charging the drone, loading batteries (4 x AAA) in the remote, and reading the manual, then reading it again. You will want to do the calibration step first off to insure level flight. Works like a charm once you understand how to do it.
Flying indoors is fairly easy, and the drone has a very snappy response to the controller. It was great fun flying it from room to room, turning and flying back. The plastic construction seems quite durable as I managed to run the drone in walls, closets, and light fixtures while getting a feel for the controller. I suspect that’s the case for others, so be reasonably assured that your drone will survive your early flight training.
I do wish this had removable batteries so that I could swap in a fresh one; five minutes each cycle just feels too short. Anyway all in all a good tradeoff for an entry level toy. Clearly fun, at least for a while.
Securely packaged and very easy to understand manual. You will need scissors to remove the drone from the packaging, jt is secured with two zip ties. NOTE: This does not come with batteries, you will also need four AAA batteries. Check the pictures out, comes with extra props, screw driver and charging cable. One of the best features is that the battery is preinstalled, no removing the battery for charging! yay!! Flight is very stable, only tested inside at the moment. Drone does very easy flips, in a tight circle so safely can perform these moves inside. Flight time is just over five minutes, a bit less if you are in "fast" mode or doing lots of tricks. The manual says a 70 minute charge time, I seem to be fully charged in about 20 minutes, your mileage may vary. I am charging from a USB charging station and not a computer like the manual shows. I even test bumped in a few walls, the prop guards did a great job and the tiny drone kept on flying! Highly recommended for any age, it will be a fun rainy day stay inside drone. Oh and its not loud at all!!
Though drones have been around for a few years, they don't get old or tired and are fun for young and old. I enjoy my electronics quite a bit so when I spotted this on Amazon and at the price it was listed - how could I not buy it? The drone arrived within 1-week of placing the order, and arrived packed very well in an outer box with bubble-wrap keeping it safe in the outer box.
The box the drone came in is also very sturdy and something that would look good given as a gift.
Once you get the drone out of the box, it comes in a plastic tray (like every other product out there). The drone along with the controller, a USB cable (to charge the drone) and some spare propellers should the ones on the drone become damaged from too much play.
Once everything is out of the box and laid out you have the drone (I got a gold color drone and LOVE IT the white propellers really give it contrast. The drone is well built and very light. The legs have rubber stoppers at the bottom so when it lands it does not damage the drone. The back of the drone has a USB outlet as you need to charge the drone for about 70-minutes to get 5-minutes of use.
You get a user manual -- which I recommend you read as there is some important information in there (connecting [pairing] the controller to the drone, how to turn the drone on/off, controlling the drone (move left/right, forward/backwards), how to use hover mode. There is also information on low-voltage protection (when the battery on the drone is low), over-current protection (when the drone encounters an impact), calibration, fast/slow speed and of course how to do a 360-degree stunt flip.
If you are someone that likes to tinker, they also provide a good breakdown of the drones assembly (though I wouldn't be disassembling this).
Four additional propellers are provided, in addition to a mini Phillips screwdriver is also provided so you can unscrew the controller and insert the batteries (you will need 4 AAA batteries -- they are not provided).
Now I was really excited to try the drone out so didn't wait the full 70-minutes to let it charge.
For the most part using the controller is intuitive, you have two joysticks on the controller (left and right) along with a button to fine-tune the movement, and an on/off button . On the front of the controller you have two more buttons for high/low speed and a very cool feature 360-degree stunt flip button! Another cool feature is an auto hover mode.
You can even use the drone indoors, which is how I was using it and once the weather improves I'll try it outside as well.
As you play with the drone be careful of the propellers - they rotate very fast and you could hurt yourself if you are not careful but that said, using common sense would avoid hurting yourself and damaging the drone.
Having played with the drone for about 1-2 weeks, I can say that this is one of the best purchases I've made. The drone is nice and small, charges within an hour and gives you enough time to play. I am probably going to buy a second drone for my son and we'll race these!
I got this drone because I wanted something I can fly indoors. I started with a bigger drone, but it was not precise enough to fly indoors. This drone is tiny and very accurate. It is very easy to fly indoors, and in fact I've been flying it all over the house. I had a good impression of Syma already because I owned a Syma RC helicopter a while back, and it was impressively easy to fly. This drone is even better.
The battery doesn't last long, about 5 minutes worth of flight time. But it is a fun 5 minutes. You'll get the thing back on the charger and can't wait for the next flight. The manual says it takes 70 minutes to charge, but it doesn't seem to take that long. Maybe 30 or 45 minutes? I haven't timed it, but it's not super long. It's pretty average for a drone. Most "toy" drones take 45 minutes or an hour to charge for 5-7 minutes of flight time.
My first flight did not go well. The drone was not calibrated to the controller to hover in place, and was drifting fast to the left and forward, but the controller can be calibrated to fix that. Better still, it remembers the calibration even when powered off. So once I got it calibrated, which took me a few flights and crashes, then it remembered the calibration setting, and I haven't had to adjust it since. This is great news! Now I just turn it on, take off, and it hovers happily in place. It is very easy to fly. I can land it anywhere I want, pretty much. The controller has two different sensitivity settings, and the low sensitivity is perfect for indoors. However, the drone can also be flown outdoors! I was skeptical about this, since it's so light and easily blown about by the wind, but at the high sensitivity setting on the controller, the drone easily has enough power to compensate for light winds. I wouldn't try it in strong wind, but light breezes are no problem.
I have actually taken to flying it outdoors more than indoors lately, because it is maneuverable, fast, and stable. I almost lost it on one outdoor flight. I took it really far, and I finally decided to just pull it down from the sky where it was, because it was almost out of sight behind some trees. I ended up crashing it on the roof of a tall building. It hit the roof pretty hard, bounced (yes, bounced!), and took to the air again. I continued cutting power because I didn't know which way it was oriented, and the drone vanished from view somewhere near the building. It found it after about 10 minutes of searching. It had crash landed upside down in the grass about 20 feet from the roof. There was some dirt on the blades, but no other visible damage. I wiped the dirt off with my fingers, powered it up again and the drone was happily back to the air. A+ for crash resistance.
Someone commented that the drone has backward lighting compared to the normal. This drone has red lights in front and green lights in back, which is opposite compared to other drones. That can take some getting used to. The drone has a trick mode and can do flips. It's pretty fun.
Overall, this easily gets 5 stars. Fantastic flying experience.

To start off with, I didn't even look at the instructions at first...ended up launching the drone into my ceiling. Read the instructions, it is helpful especially when adjusting the trim so it will hover in place..or at least close to it. I didn't find that it required 70 minutes to charge, I could typically get a pretty good charge in about 30 minutes. I suppose the charge time will vary and possibly change as it is cycled.
Flying the drone isn't too hard, I haven't tried headless mode yet but getting used to turning can take a little time. I am getting about 5 minutes or so of flight per charge, wish it were longer but this is a very small drone. I have found this to be far more fun than I expected. On the downside....my dog doesn't like it very much and I have run it into a few walls attempting some evasive maneuvers when my dog tried to jump up and attack it so now it sounds a little off and takes me a bit to get to hover correctly. This is not a fault of the drone...just me messing with my dog, lol.
I think as long as you keep in perspective this is a very small drone, no cameras nothing terribly fancy but fun none the less.
It comes with a usb charging cable, can plug it into a computer or a spare usb block that you probably have laying around. While charging the led will be red on the underside of the drone. When you turn it on and the controller the red and green led's flash until they pair up, then they are solid on.
I have purchased Syma products before, and wanted a new portable drone for my son to practice on. Packaging came pretty standard, with the drone and remote securely attached to the packaging with wire. Accessories include a screwdriver for the battery cover, a microUSB cable and spare propellers.
I like the bumper guards on this drone to prevent propeller damage which is an inevitability at times when using indoors. It has an "easy take-off/landing" feature by pressing the two top buttons. The dual analog controllers are precise.
Battery life is about 8-10 minutes, which is more than sufficient for a drone of this size. Remote requires 4x AAA batteries, so prepare for that. Range of the remote appears to be around 50 feet.
What I did NOT like about this drone was trimming out of the box; it would fly forwards and took quite a while to get it steady using the left-side button and analog stick. Once that's taken care of, it was smooth sailing! READ THE MANUAL before flying this drone, as you'll need to adjust the trim, guaranteed.
All in all, nice little drone for the price, appears durable, has good battery life for its size, and I had very little problem controlling it.
The Syma X20 is great! The X20 is much easier to fly indoors, and much more stable, than a drone and helicopter I’ve had in the past. By the time of its second flight (or should I say second charge) I was already figuring out how to fly it around the house without frequently crashing it.
It is a lot more fun flying a drone when you can easily control it and fly it without constant crashes!
The only other drone I’ve tried in the past was a small drone (slightly larger) that ran nearly twice the price of this drone. It was three years ago and it was a well-reviewed “beginners” drone. But while it was fun to fly I was never quite able to really get the hang of flying it without quickly crashing every minute or so after a few months my interest faded away. I had similar experiences with a small helicopter a couple years before that.
With the X20 I was quickly able to learn to control it. It is much more stable and can hover in one place with a minimal amount of effort and is lots of fun to fly around the house. I did spend a few minutes getting it trimmed, as described in the instructions, to stabilize it but was able to accomplish that in my second 5 minute session with it which helped a lot – a tip I read in another review here.
I like the looks and size of the X20 as well. I really appreciate the fact that you charge it by plugging a standard micro USB charging cable (one cable is included with the kit) into a socket on the drone itself. The drone and helicopter I used in the past required removing the battery and a special charging cable. Now I don’t have to worry about finding the charging cable as it’s the same kind used for many small electronics, including most non-apple phones and tablets, so I always have one handy around the house.
Since receiving the X20 about two weeks ago I’ve only had a handful of chances to fly it (I’m a busy adult) but with it being so easy to control and fly I’m loving it!
My husband loves anything RC and he has been asking me for a drone for months! I purchased this for him and he loves it.
So far here is what he likes:
1. Drone is easy to use
2. Controls are intuitive
3. Fast more for advanced operation
4. Quick charge time (70 minutes charge, 5-7 min of flight time)
5. LED lights on the bottom that help orient drone while flying
6. Light weight, easy to take anywhere
7. Included replaceable blades and a thorough users manual (I recommend reading before flying drone)
8. Can be used indoor and outdoor
9. Well made
Overall, this is a great product! My 10 month old son loves watching daddy play with the drone. Soon he will need one too.
