Quality cast iron pre-seasoned, heavy, but carries heat evenly so useful for certain types of cooking. Scalloped potatoes work out real well, with less cleaning effort than when I use porcelain. While I could use a glass lid to monitor the progress on some cooking, most of the time Dutch oven type food does not need constant monitoring. I keep some pots and pans handy on top of my stove, so this will double for two things and takes up minimal space. One on the nice things about cast iron, is when you want to warm things back up like casseroles, you can use an induction type cooktop, and do it most anywhere there's and electrical outlet nearby.
Flip off the lid and you can cook up sausage and eggs for breakfast or French toast, nicely browned. It works equally well for home fries and hash browns. Pancakes will work too, but can be tricky as the temp has got to be right you burn or undercook them. A good pan set, I only reference that it's very heavy so not for the weak elderly or the infirm, but for most of us, it is very good. Recommended for most.
This is a big heavy cast iron dutch oven. Even the lid is heavy weight. Both pieces cook food very evenly. Cleaning takes more effort than with a non-stick pan, but you don't have to worry about the non-stick coating wearing out. Just re-season it periodically and it will last a lifetime.
I grew up with cast iron cookware and have used cast iron cookware as an adult. I used an array of different size skillets, roasting pans and specialty cookware. This double dutch oven is one size I did not have until now. My kitchen of cast iron is now complete.
Pros
The lid also serves as a skillet
The fit, finish and build is of good quality construction
Heat is even throughout giving that perfect cast iron cooking experience
Seasons up nicely turning that well known black finish
Cons
The double dutch oven was advertised as pre seasoned, but when it arrived the finish was a very light unseasoned cast iron finish compared to the pictures provided on the order page of a dutch oven with a dark finish. Not a deal breaker and the oven seasoned up nicely once I coated it with oil and baked it at 400 degrees for one hour then let it remain in the oven until completely cool to the touch.
I'm a long-time Lodge cast iron fan and have a lot of their pots and pans. This is pretty equal to theirs and seems to be nicely pre-seasoned. I've cooked in this a few times and it's holding up very well & keeping its seasoning fine. It's a good solid weight and washes super easily, as cast iron should!
Update:
I have used this DO for meal after meal now, and have another nit. Yeah, just one. It is still a great pot, but the interior of the lid is not truly flat. The outside is, which is awesome, but the interior has a hump. It hasn't negatively affected performance, and I use it for nearly everything anyway, but when you melt butter or add oil, the liquid flows over to one side instead of being evenly distributed. I still fry eggs in it, and all sorts of other things, but it is a "flaw" you might want to know about.
Original: This is a great dutch oven. I have two enameled dutch ovens that I love also, but wanted one to bake bread in. One of my enameled ones has discolored due to the high heat used for sourdough baking. This came to the rescue. It is a very nice size at 5 qt. The lid can be used as a skillet or the lid of the pot. I have used it on an induction cooktop and it works great: the flat side are truly flat. I had a lodge 12" skillet one time that was convex and consequently couldn't be used on a glass surface. The pan seems very well made.
The pan is heavy duty, and heavy. The lid seals well if the handles are aligned, but not so well if they are not aligned with each other, then the lid can rock some (thus the 4 stars instead of 5). It comes preseasoned, but the instructions say to season anyway. I heated the lid to the smoking point for a long time on a gas cooktop to burn off the existing seasoning and then reasoned with flax seed oil, which creates the most durable seasoning. I haven't gotten around to doing the same with the base yet, but that is coming. The existing seasoning works fine for cooking and baking so now you can use this cast iron for anything an enameled pot can be used for except long cooking of acidic foods, e.g. tomato based. The acid will remove the seasoning and mess up the pot. It is more durable though, can be used at higher temperatures, and is less delicate. E.g. an enameled pot should be heated over not-higher-than-medium heat so that the enamel and the metal can expand together without crazing the enamel, and of course it cannot be put into cold water when hot for the same reason.
The surface of this oven and lid have a pebbly texture. Some people complain about a pebbled surface on new cast iron, as opposed to the "superior" smooth surfaces of old. I've had smooth and pebbly and cannot cannot tell a difference in function if the surface is properly seasoned. The carbon acts like graphite and is very non-stick, pebbly surface or not.
The oven comes with a pamphlet on how to care for your cast iron. Wash it one time only with dish soap, and dry on a cooktop or in a hot oven to make sure all water is completely removed. Oil lightly and wipe off excess oil before storing. After each use, clean without soap (chain mail scrubbers are awesome on cast iron), dry with heat, oil, and don't forget the outside. Simple. If you mess up and it starts to rust, clean off the rust and reseason. No biggie.

This is a great cast iron dutch oven. As someone who prefers to cook on cast iron, this is a quality set. It says it comes pre-seasoned, but things will stick - pre-seasoning always needs additional steps. To re-season, wash in soapy water (only wash in soap if you are going to re-season!) and make sure it is thoroughly dried. Spread a thin layer of a high temp oil (crisco, grapeseed, avocado) all over the cast iron, including the bottom. Turn it upside down (place a pan underneath to catch any oil drips) and bake for an hour at 375°.
Always use a bit of oil prior to cooking while gently heating the cookware, and clean while the pan is warm. THis should help the seasoning to last and prevent sticking.
As the cast iron gets used, it turns a dark black and has a sheen.
This works in the over or out in a camp (car camping only because this is too heavy to carry for a hike). The bottom is rough but will smooth out as it gets used. The top can be used as a skillet or in a grill. Both appear to heat uniformly.
Do use mitts as the metal gets hot. The one drawback of this model is that it doesn't come with the silicone handles for ease of handling.
However, this is a nice dutch oven that will last a lifetime. Cast iron is almost impossible to ruin.
Our kitchen is small, so we're always looking for space-saving ways to cook. And since we're trying to cook at home more these days, this combination skillet and Dutch oven set is perfect for us.
We used the skillet to fix breakfast food the other day. Eggs and sausage cooked up quite nicely in it. We did spray the skillet with plenty of spray before using it, since it isn't a non-stick surface.
We use the Dutch oven for things like soups and chili. Both the Dutch oven and the skillet are quite heavy.
Cleaning these after cooking takes awhile. First we soak them in warm sudsy water, then scrub them with a scrubbing brush. No dishwasher for these.
Storage -- with the skillet fitting on top of the Dutch oven as a lid -- is a breeze.
Great cast iron skillet and oven rolled into one. Made of quality cast iron this thing is perfectly designed and constructed. Has easy to pick up/grab and hold handles. Converts from a pot to a frying pan. Remove the lid and you have your cast iron frying pan. Frying pan is the lid for the pot. Both the pot and lid have sturdy high quality handles. The material it's made of is top notch, pot and lid are coated nicely. Pot is nice and deep, holds 5 quarts. Good for all types of meals. I'd recommend this to anyone, great cookware for the kitchen.
They tell you you're not really cooking unless you are using cast iron. I know--gatekeeping food preparation? How ridiculous. So I guess you could buy this just because you're insecure about what others think of your culinary skills, but if you want to use it to actually cook, you can't go wrong.
What I like is that the lid doubles as a skillet in its own right, so you save some space in your kitchen. Cast iron is heavy and a pot like this takes up space, so that is a real consideration.
Over the years we have tried non-stick and stainless steel for cooking, and nothing compares to cast iron for cooking foods evenly and not scorching the pan/struggling to clean up. This product is both a 10" heavy duty 5 quart cook pot and the lid doubles as a fry pan as well! We adore things with dual purpose -- what a clever design!
Saved us from having to purchase a lid and a fry pan as well! Can't beat that!
