ChefSofi Mortar and Pestle Set - Unpolished Heavy Granite for Enhanced Performance and Organic Appearance - INCLUDED: Anti-Scratch Protector + Italian Recipes EBook - 6 Inch, 2 Cup-Capacity

EDIT: Apr 2 2018. They fixed the issue I pointed out in the review below and sent me a free mortar and pestle with the updated design. Thank you, ChefSofi. Raising to 5 stars from 4 stars earlier.

Very well made, good balance, deep. Perfect amount of grit for items wet or dry. I think I will be using this for a very long time.

I could have given it 5 stars if the pestle was designed a bit better. The bottom has a pointy tip which is not ideal for grinding dry things. It should match the angle of the mortar itself as it increases the surface of the impact area for crushing or muddling. Also it could have been a little bit bigger -- both in girth and height ... for efficiency and more comfort especially if you are non petite hands.

I am from India and have used a mortar and pestle for a long long time. I highly recommend this product, but I also hope they improve the pestle design.

Please follow the instructions on cleaning -- do not use soap of any kind.

This granite mortar and pestle set is of very high quality, more so than I was expecting, even having previously read many of the reviews here.

This is a great and practical kitchen tool for crushing and grinding dry and/or wet ingredients. A spice grinder or coffee grinder can work very well for dried herbs and lighter, woody type spices, but it will not cope well with hard grains, seeds, salt, nor even particularly well with some other dried ingredients such as whole hot chilies. For moist ingredients such as fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables, and liquids such as oil and vinegar, you would need something like a food processor as well. This mortar and pestle set can serve as both, and being used via a manual process, lets you adjust and grind things to your taste and consistency preference.

The mortar and pestle are rough cut or ground and have a lot of fine grip on the surface, but the cut is very even without hardly any signs of cutting marks nor divots. The bottom of the mortar is polished smooth except for the engraved branding in the middle, which is nice since it means it's less likely to scratch the surfaces of what you're using it on. Also, a fairly thin 3M nonslip foam rubber sticker is included to put on the bottom of the mortar, if you'd prefer.

Make sure you follow the directions on "seasoning" (breaking in) your set as there is a lot of surface dust that will grind off. You may also want to start off using some water in the bottom of the mortar – just enough to cover it – and grind stone on stone, pestle against mortar, rotating each and covering the interior of the mortar as you go, then rinse, dry, and followup with using dry white rice as per the instructions.

Also, I wanted to mention that you more than likely won't want to wear rings when using this, since the rough, hard surfaces of the mortar and pestle can scratch them up pretty easily.

Overall, I highly recommend this set. Mine arrived in perfect condition.

High five!

Having served in the Peace Corps in Thailand 1973-75, I can attest that this set is the real McCoy-sturdy, functional, and an industrial piece of art! I appreciate that the seller emailed exactly how to season the mortar and how to add incredients of a recipe from dry to wet. Well pleased with this purchase!

This is a really good mortar and pestle. Just heavy enough to feel firm in your hands and large enough to pound ingredients for a family+guests meal. That said, crushing smaller quantities of ingredients works just fine!

Initially, I was a bit concerned about the one time procedure to get the mortar ready for use. Was expecting it to rain fine stone dust which would require multiple uses to get rid of. However, even the first time that I ground some white rice, there were no black particles. The mortar and pestle worked fine right out of the box. However, I went through the recommended procedure of grinding rice, cumin, salt, and pepper, just for safety's sake.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with the product and the seller. The seller takes a lot of personal interest and seems very sincere about creating a good customer experience. The number of free e-books on recipes are also very good. I'd definitely recommend this product to others.

This mortar and pestle is really awesome! I just love it and I suggest you all get one now and start appreciating your herbs more! It brings out such flavor and aroma! And it's very therapeutic to grind herbs. I had a very slight issue with mine, and the customer service I received just blew me away! They fixed my issue and then some!! I'm very impressed and love my purchase. Get this today!!!!

In a world where people want the latest gadget to grind spices, garlic, herbs, and other ingredients for food. Why use a food processor, which is hard to clean, hard to maintain, and doesn't give you the same satisfaction as this. Take cloves, cardamom, and cinnamon sticks - heat them in a skillet until they make an aroma- take them out, grind them in this, and they have a perfect curry. No need for a "spice grinder." This is made well, by a company that cares.

The only thing I disliked about my ChefSofi Mortar and Pestle Set, was the crushing of the rice to prep and season it. I had a hard time trying to grind the rice up higher on the inside. I must have done it right, because crushing termeric hasn't stained it.
I use it every morning, for crushing the Ginger and Termeric, for our health drink.

I love that the company sent me an email with the detailed prep and seasoning instructions, as well as an ebook with tons of Italian recipes.

I've limped along in life with agate mortars and pestles, but recently read a description of granite versions (which are also called molcajetes). This particular mortar and pestle seemed pretty reasonably priced, so I took a leap, and I am very happy that I did. The mortar and pestle is very large - the bowl is big enough for grinding a whole lot of stuff. The description says it can hold 2 cups, which I believe. It's really large. Far nicer than any other I have owned before.

My education is in chemistry, so I've been familiar with mortars and pestles my whole life, although I've only used ceramic and agate at this point. Both work well enough, but in my experience, agate is too smooth to grind really effectively within a short period of time. You can work at it and get the job done, but it will take effort. Granite brings the use of a mortar and pestle to another level. The weight of the pestle helps with the grinding, but the rough surface of the granite material itself adds considerable ease to the use.

It is true that granite requires a break-in of sorts - seasoning, as the manufacturer calls it. You need to clean the mortar well enough to get the granite grit out of the bowl (and your food). I may have gone a bit overboard, because I spent about 30 minutes on this step, but I did want to make sure all was well. At this point, the mortar and pestle functions extremely well. I'm very happy that I purchased it and I wish I'd done it much earlier than now!

I received the set yesterday, and immediately set out to season it. But rather than grinding up a lot of rice, I used the water method (there are several videos for this on youtube) to do the initial polish. It takes some patience, but it's not hard to do. After using the water as a lubricant to polish the mortar and pestle surface, I ground up a couple of small handfuls of rice, and then the spices as recommended by the manufacturer. It worked like a charm - although my house smelled like taco seasoning for a couple of hours after that. :)

I used the M&P to grind up some spices for a pork injection last night, and it worked like a charm. I will be getting a lot of use out of this!

Also, I received an email from the seller the day the M&P arrived with instructions for notifying them if anything was broken, or if I had any questions. I like that kind of customer service, and if I see something else from ChefSofi that I want I will not hesitate to buy from them again.

So far, so good. This thing is a beast. Clear instructions for a one time seasoning out of the box, and after that it's go time! I've ground many different spices. Fennel seeds, cumin seeds, sunflower seeds, thyme, oregano, chervil, garlic, etc, without issue. It's easy to get the exact consistency you want. For example, it's so much easier to "bruise" chervil in this without actually grinding it up than other methods I've used in the past.

The bottom of the pestle exactly matches the curve of the mortar, making it so you get a lot of grinding done each stroke/twist/smash.

A bit of trivia, you cannot grind Annatto seeds with this, or with any other mortar and pestle apparently without some Herculean amount of effort. I tried grinding them and after beating the holy hell out of 1/2 cup seeds, I think I managed to break about 5 of them. They also stained it red, although after a few more weeks of using it the red is fading away. Not the products fault, just beware :) I have found grinding a bit of salt afterwards is a good way to clean it up. Followed by a quick rinse.
