Rexing V1P 3rd Generation Dual 1080p Full HD Front and Rear 170 Degree Wide Angle Wi-Fi Car Dash Cam with Supercapacitor, 2.4

If you're looking at Rexing for a dashcam I would go with the V1LG over the V1P 3rd Gen. The V1LG has a built in GPS, the maximum resolution is 1080, and it's a little cheaper.

1) The built in WiFi is useless. Once the WiFi is enabled all local control is disabled. There are many programs (apps) that will allow you to control the dashcam from your mobile phone, none of these apps are made by the manufacture. I couldn't find a way to download the content from the dashcam through any of these third party programs.
2) Don't go with the 128 Gb MicroSD card. The manufacture web site claims support for sizes up to 128 Gb but the dashcam would recognize the SD card sometimes and would want to format the card every time. For reference the 128 Gb card was a Kingston Canvas Go. The dashcam had no problems with a Sandisk Ultra Plus 64 Gb I have. Both of these SD cards are C10 / UHS1 devices.
3) The cable lengths for the provided rear camera and the additional GPS unit from Rexing are generous.
4) The fisheye effect is more noticeable at the higher resolutions (2160 vs 1080).
5) Recording with both the front and rear at the same time limits the resolution to 1080.
6) The GPS data is encode into the video. The manufacture does provide a link to a third party program that will display the video, location, and speed. The program did have issues (frame drops, stuttering) with playback at 2160. Other third party programs including VLC didn't have the same playback issues.

So far so good - daytime video is pretty clear and the video files for front and rear are named with A and B to identify them easily.

Night time footage seems a bit noisy. I had an Anker Roav C1 Pro before and I thought that night time footage was better. Unfortunately the ROAV didn't survive the heat from the brutal sun in Texas. The Rexing seems to be handling it fine so far due to the super capacitor.

Thinking about purchasing a second one for my wife's Suburban.

Update:

I'm using these cams on my F-150. After routing the cable to the rear cam differently than initially attempted, there was an abundance of cable leftover. For the other F-150 owners considering the purchase and installation of this set, I highly recommend routing the cable along the top of the doors - it's the easiest way to wire the rear camera and the entire cable is well concealed either under the weatherstripping or by the tops of plastic trim pieces on the doors or by the headliner.

One more suggestion for those F-150 owners looking to install this camera. I used the provided cigartette lighter power chord and ran it from the power port under the arm rest of the center console, thru the area at the back of the glove box and up the A pillar and over to the front cam, with a foot or more to spare. You may find it more convenient to tap into one of the lines in overhead console assuming there's a switched or timed power line. Another alternative is to check the fuse panel on the front passenger footwell area - there's an accessory wiring (sold separately) to power the cameras with a new line protected with a fuse. It was a lot of work running the power line the way I did it. If I had to do it again, I'd chose to run a new line from the fuse box but I had a shortage of time and used the provided power cable.

There's a sense of satisfaction of having both the front and rear cams functioning as they should.

I'm not sure if the phone app warrants a star deduct but it wants to know and keep a lot of information about you. Without acceptance of it knowing your contacts, location and other info it will not work. On Android, I'm able to restrict the information after initial acceptance but at the same time, this path maybe the equivalent of a placebo effect. Just sharing this information. The app (Android version) allows you to select the different menu choices offered on the camera via the phone. You can simply not use the phone app and still have a fully functioning system, without the sharing of all your information.

So I'm upgrading the star rating at this time too.

Original Post: Nice packaging but I found the length of rear dash cam wire too short. Wasted money trying to use a USB extension cable to find out it's not compatible (USB mini). I can't find the right type and length of cable for the rear dash.

Wi-Fi is good.

Admittedly, the specs are nice but all that is lost when only the front camera is usable. I guess I'll return mine and look elsewhere for a complete front and rear dash cam.

Full disclosure, Rexing sent me a bonus to review, but since I am an avid dash cam explorer I am providing my honest take. That said I also own the Rexing V1LG, which I got on my own and am very happy with. I am looking at this unit as a replacement for another car, so I will be doing some comparisons between the V1P 3gen and V1LG, each has its sweet spot.

First off, the potential negatives, I did not deduct stars for these as they should not factor into your purchase decision. Biggest one for me is the GPS, I like to be able to have that to document speed, location, etc. Not everyone wants that. The V1LG comes with built in GPS, which is a big plus for me since it cuts down one cable. This unit requires a separate GPS antenna, they list the Rexing GPS Logger for Rexing V1 3rd Gen, V1P, $30 regular (would like to review that as well). I have tried plugging in another gps receiver from an old dashcam, it connects but the data is goofy (where is longitude -3275?) Too bad, would have made an upgrade easier for some, but again, not really a negative, since not everyone wants a gps (big brother fears). The downloadable software will read gps data if included (it gets embedded in the mp4 recordings)

The other issue that has affected my V1LG and MAY (not will, but may) affect this is the double sided tape for the mount. Note, this comes with two main camera mounts and two 3M tape pads. My previous mount failed in the summer heat, however Rexing sent me a replacement mount (with what appears to be better tape) and that has not had an issue. From what I can tell the tape coming in this package looks like the replacement tape they sent, but time will tell. There are alternative tapes and adhesives you can get if concerned, and like I said if you have any issues Rexing customer service responds very quickly, they want your business. I've had zero issues with the tape on the rear camera. They do not seem to have suction cup mounts for these, which is fine, those fail way too often for me.

Now on to the pure positives. First and foremost, image quality. It is the best I've seen (V1LG is good, this is better). As a result I recommend 32 or 64gb sd card (oh, no sd card with this, ViLG came with a 16gb, really too small and I'd rather buy my own. Make sure it is class 10). Recordings are clear, no pixelation, breaking of signal, no skips in recordings so far. Unit turns on and off with the car fine, remembers settings, and you have options to adjust recording settings, loop time, audio on/off (and mute button on the device), and you can click off the display with a short click of power button. Oh, when in menu mode remember, power button is not ok button, that did confuse me at first.

Instructions are fairly clear, and you can download pdf at the same website as pc software (rexingusa.com). All you need to learn that's not intuitive is how to switch between photo and video and how to go into playback mode (long presses of menu button). Also you have wifi mode which I will get into. You can fine adjust the camera in front and switch between regular and wide mode. I am able to read license plates clearly in both.

Wifi, for those interested, very similar to gopro. Download TimaCam on your phone and use that to connect to camera wifi (need to turn wifi on in settings, and recording button will get you in and out). Note, I do not see an option to change the wifi password, so I recommend leaving this off until you use it. Holding the Rec button turns wifi off when you are done.

Finally some of the intangibles. Both power cable and second camera cable are usb mini (not micro, mini. V1LG uses micro for rear camera). The rear camera cable is long enough for most cars with plenty of slack, and good quality cable. I have no issues running this above my window weather trim to my back window (yes, you need to feed it through the divides, YMMV). For the power cable I like to get the direct wired option. The V1LG draws more power so they do not use the miniUSB, but fortunately for me I just wired my second car with a generic miniusb power supply that works with the ViP 3gen. Important, you need 5V and 2A, lower and it doesn't necessarily power up. If you don't have one Rexing makes one (linked on the Amazon page), however there are generic ones. Most important (other than the 2A) is getting the right size fuse to plug into your car's fuse box (you plug it into an open fuse spot and wire the ground to car chassis, if you're not comfortable with this stick with the plug). There are different sizes, mini, low profile mini, micro2, etc. I had to get the generic harness for my old car (low profile mini), but it has the usbmini on the other end and is 2a so all is good.

Final words - a lot of people underestimate the value of a good quality dashcam, and they look for the cheapest available solution. That is a mistake, I've had generic units that drop parts of recordings, (imagine being in an accident and you think you have proof its not your fault but the unit failed?), had poor resolution (someone clips your car and runs off and you can't make out the license plate?) or just fails on you too early. Now, I cannot attest the to lifetime of this unit since its new, but it does have a 1 year warranty (which can be 18 months if you register online, do this!). Overall I recommend this product (or the V1LG, like I said I have both, each has their pluses), and honestly I don't see myself buying dashcams from anyone else.

I give this dash camera 5 Stars. I have a Rexing V1LG that has the built in GPS in my truck. I found that the GPS was a nice feature; however, not necessary for my use. I am quite pleased with that Rexing dash camera.

I am also quite pleased with this one that I am reviewing used in a second vehicle. I can always add the GPS later if desired. For mounting I used the optional suction mount with this unit; a personal preference.

The important issue to me is image quality. It is excellent and I get no blurring, distortion or fluttering of the images. I used a Samsung 64 GB SD card. Any quality brand name will work; just ensure it is Class 10 or better. After three days I pulled the SD card and viewed the images on my PC. Excellent quality. I could read license plates and bumper stickers quite well. Colors were vivid even in low light conditions. And 64 GB more than met my needs as I set it to loop; record over the oldest videos. The below two images have a slight glare from the sun. So the quality is even better than what you see.

I found using the menu a bit hard to follow at first. However, after about an hour of playing with the menu selections I was able to move around and make my selections with no problems. I normally use video mode. You can go to the Rexing website and download a PDF copy of the manual. I found that a bit easier to read. Once you use it a while, the menu options become second nature. Remember to hold the Power Button down to turn the unit on and off; couple of seconds.

The cable length was more than adequate to set up the smaller camera. The excess I carefully tucked under the trim inside. The power cable and AC adapter was not a problem. All I did was to route the cable inside the dash, then under the passenger window trim and finally the top trim of the windshield. Works fine for me; however, you may want the hard-wire kit; inexpensive option.

The Rexing comes with a 12-month warranty. Register on line and it is extended to 18 months. I did not have to use Rexing Support for this camera. When I bought my first Rexing camera I emailed two questions on the menu options. Each was answered in under 24 hours; one in less than two hours. My questions were resolved and in a most friendly way. Support takes their job seriously.

Finally, the price. I had a “other brand” dash cam that worked great until the six-month warranty expired. A month later; it died. $89; not worth it. Then I opted for the first Rexing and now this one. I feel I have high quality at a reasonable price. Going cheap is sometimes more expensive. All in all, quite pleased with this camera and it is Five Star recommended.

Description

Rexing V1P 3rd Generation Dual 1080p Full HD Front and Rear 170 Degree Wide Angle Wi-Fi Car Dash Cam with Supercapacitor, 2.4" LCD Screen, G-Sensor, Loop Recording, Mobile App

Pros
Camera was well packaged
Packaging included all necessary mounting hardware, plus a handy tool for hiding the wires
Picture quality without any adjustments (right out of the box) was decent enough
Fairly easy to install, basically a "plug and play" camera
Very easy to figure out button use, well configured
Easy to navigate menus
Both cameras have nice physical rotation/adjustment options

Cons
Cameras were both set to 1080P resolution right out of the box, but the front camera seems to have some trouble adjusting to bright lights, and goes grey/pixellated

Placement of the Memory Card slot is abysmal - the power cord included is at a right angle, so the base of the cord gets in the way of the slot and makes insertion/removal difficult

I’ve been using a Rexing V1 since April, but wanted to get something that provided camera coverage to the front and rear of my vehicle. I live in an area where we get regular snowfall during the winter and want a way to have video coverage for the front and back of my vehicle.

The software set up on the V1P is easy to set up, especially if you have used a dash camera before. One thing that is different from this camera, compare to other cameras Rexing makes, you cannot access the menu while your camera is recording. You have to stop recording then can go into the menu to change a setting.

All the cable lengths are very good, with the cable to connect the front and rear camera being long enough to work and have plenty of length left over. I routed the cable through my headliner so I had a place to hide the excess cable from the rear camera. I used fish tape to help get the cable from the front of the car to the back window. The rear camera is mounted in the back window at the very top by the third brake light.

The Wi-Fi does work on this camera but not with Rexing Connect, which the instructions tell you to use, as that app never actually connects with the camera. With one of their other cameras I had, they said to use the TimaCam app, which is much better and connects to the camera much easier. You have to make sure you are not recording to get TimaCam to connect to the dash camera. Turn on your phone’s Wi-Fi and connect to the network name shown on the screen of the dash camera. If you are trying to download a clip while driving, your camera cannot be recording to download. I have my camera set to do 3 minute loops (approx. 150MB file size) and it takes about a minute or so to download one clip to the phone using TimaCam. The files ending in A are the front facing, B are the rear facing camera.

The cameras operate very well during daylight hours, and take nice clear videos. The V1P does a good job overall of providing good camera coverage to the front and rear, but during early morning (before the sun is up) and night driving the images lose detail due to vehicle and street lights. You also need to make sure that you keep your windows very clean, which can be difficult in the winter in areas with lots of precipitation/snow fall. I have both of the cameras set to run at 1080P (Front) & 1080P (rear). I don’t care that this camera doesn’t have GPS to record location and speed. I don’t really want to have my vehicle’s speed noted on the video, as video evidence could be detrimental should the GPS show my speed slightly higher than the posted limit.

I had a 128GB Kingston Canvas Go! Micro SD card (one which Rexing recommends), and the camera wouldn’t recognize the card. I used a Kingston Canvas Go! 64GB card and it works fine.

Video shown is in the morning before the sun comes up, so you can get an idea of what it'll look like at night, when its a little foggy outside.

I was chosen to test and review this product for Rexing in exchange for compensation.

Prior to buying the V1P 3rd Gen I had bought the Rexing V1 dash cam. I received a special offer from Rexing which prompted this upgrade. It is really nice to have a rear camera for added safety. I drive a truck and occasionally pull a 15,000 pound fifth wheel so it is important for me to have a dash cam that I can trust in case of any liability concerns.

The power cords to both camera are plenty long for any vehicle so setup is very easy. The best way to view the videos is to download the videos to your phone to the TimaCam and then from the app you can save it to your phone. From there you can upload it as needed or just keep it on your phone. I have to admit it was a little challenging to figure out how to transfer the videos over to my phone but within 5-10 minutes I had it figured out. There is a nice link online that helps you connect via wifi or can use owners manual.

Very easy to install. Just put a 3M piece on the window and then the camera slides right in. Then it is a little work to get the cord hidden in the car.

The front camera is a bit larger then I expected. However I am still able to hide it behind my rear view mirror so it is out of my view.

Overall this is a solid camera and has stood up to the hot and humid Florida weather thus far which is hard to come by with anything that attaches to the windshield. We already have the V1LG and it’s been nothing but spectacular in two separate vehicles and this V1P Gen 3 model has done the same. The image quality is great, and I would say better than the V1LG but I would highly recommend a higher capacity SD card such as 64GB to be able to capture both the front and rear cameras. We went with the SD card Rexing recommends and it’s done great with simple and easy playback just as the V1LG does. I’m sure any high quality SD card would be fine.

Rexing gives plenty of cable line for both the power supply and the rear camera so I don’t see an issue with this for any vehicle as it was easy to wire in my wife’s Toyota Prius. The power supply is different from the V1LG as it is 5V and these cables do not work interchangeably. Simple to use the supplied cigarette lighter or pick up the hard wire kit and run it into the interior compartment fuse box (Be sure to do some research on the type of fuse and available fuse spots that can be used).

The camera itself is well built and the included instructions are easy to follow for set up and adjustments. If you live somewhere like here in Florida, keep this booklet handy because you may need to make a few adjustments like I did based on exposure to make sure everything is visible. Speaking of visibility and image quality after reviewing the footage there were no lags, skips, pixilation, or missed time frames. Images were clear enough to read other plates and I can tell you from experience with our V1LG dash cam if you have to submit the footage to law enforcement or the courts, they want to be able to clearly make out the plate numbers and this gives you great images to do just that.

Reviewing footage is simple after installing the software on your computer and all files are labeled easily to tell which is from the front camera and which is from the rear.

The Wi-Fi feature is nice but not something we readily use, I’ve used it on other dash cams that didn’t have a screen for proper position and image quality but with Rexing one of the perks is the ability to see the image live in my opinion. We’ll probably play with the Wi-Fi as time passes.

While this camera is certainly easy to install, easy to use, and provides better picture quality then the V1LG I prefer the GPS features of the V1LG because I do a lot more driving then my wife does. For her this is an excellent dash cam and I feel better knowing if something happens we have the footage for it (Like I said previously, the dash cam footage has helped us twice now with accidents that were not our fault and once for another driver that was the victim of a hit and run car accident).

If you’re in the market for a dash cam you can’t go wrong with a Rexing product!

i have used dashcams now for the past 5 years. this is the first time i have used the Rexing brand. the unit was easy to install using basic tools. i got the mini-USB power kit to plug right into the fuse block. Ran the power cord around the perimeter of the windshield and the rear camera cord along the tops of the doors (Nissan Frontier). I used some trim tools from the parts store($10) that helps get the cords under the door trim without damaging the trim or the wires.

The video, when reviewed on desktop, looks good although night is challenging reading license plates. The rear camera works well, but my windows are tinted giving the camera a fit at night. No problems in daytime.

Removing the SD card to take in an review is painless.

Wish it had GPS built-in, but after having it on my last devices, there is not really much use for buying the add on. I used it in an accident one time, but just for my benefit of knowing the speed at impact. Even then, there was a significant discrepancy on the displayed speed and the system GPS speed (another brand device).
