MSI GV62 8RD-034 15.6

I bought this laptop for my brother since he is going off to college, but he is also a gamer who plays PC games. He has given me all the information for this review.

He says the keys felt very weird to actually use for everyday use like typing. Seemed to have a lot of resistance, but he is used to a mechanical keyboard.

The ram is very average, especially when you have multiple programs or tabs open in a browser. Can't go crazy in the tabs or else the ram will reach max capacity quickly. At least the ram can be upgraded, but doing it yourself will violate the manufacturer warranty. He says 16GB of ram would be preferred over the 8.

In terms of gaming, it will definitely not be able to run the newest games AAA titles at very high or ultra quality with the GTX 1050ti, but it will allow you play at medium maybe. My brother ran a program called 3DMark which is used for benchmarking computers by running simulations testing the CPU and GPU. He said the computer got an overall score of 1910 after updating the GeForce drivers. In the GPU tests, it got an average FPS of 10.84 and the CPU got 12.16 FPS.
He found this to be very weird as usually the GPU is better than the CPU in higher end computers. Also, the overall score is pretty low. A GTX 1080 would score on an average FPS of 44.69. As a quick note, these values are not values taken from actual games. FPS will generally be higher as a GTX 1080 can easily run 60 FPS and higher if not limited by a game. None of the components were overclocked either.

USB port count at 3 is lacking for some gamers. If you have a USB headset, a two USB keyboard, and a USB mouse, you will not have enough ports. As well as if you want to charge your phone or attach USB printer cords.

The speakers on this laptop are located at the end of your computer underneath where your wrist are when typing. They're not really good in quality or loud. As a gamer, you should get headphones anyway to have a better experience.

When the laptop came in, it was not updated to the newest version of Windows 10 Home. My brother had to update the OS and drivers for the trackpad. Could not scroll up or down on a webpage using two fingers on the track pad. He doesn't consider this a big deal as updating is normal. When he got a desktop from iBuyPower, the computer came fully installed and updated with Nvidia GeForce Experience and also removed annoying programs like Norton so you didn't get notifications.

Speaking of Norton, you get a 60 day free trial with Norton once the computer is activated.

Battery life is short when you are playing video games and running at 50% brightness. About two-three hours.

The cooling system is decent, but it is a bit loud if you are doing quiet work or in a quiet area. If you have noise cancelling headphones, you will be fine.

Overall, the computer for the price is good. I may have written a lot of negatives, but this was to tell other consumers what they should expect. When it comes to gaming, you pay for what you get. Laptops seem to be more expensive over desktops. Most brands are the same price except for those extremely overpriced like Alienware or Razer for the same specs. For the price, the computer will do its job. Run video games while also being used for college work.

Bought this laptop for my son for college-- he's a gamer and an engineering student, and needs to run CPU-intensive programs. "It's really fast and runs really smoothly." It does seem to pick up oil marks from fingers easily, but it's cleanable and ultimately doesn't subtract from the laptop's performance or quality. His only knock on the computer is battery life-- it lasts an hour and a half. Granted, that is dependent on brightness, airplane mode, etc, and he normally uses it when around a wall outlet, but it nonetheless limits where you can take it. Great laptop if you won't be away from an outlet for long periods of time and are just looking for easy portability and tons of power from location to location.

Straight out of the box the laptop worked perfectly. Looks and feels great, I bought this laptop for $800 on Black Friday, and I can tell you right now, very good for $800.

The laptop is very good overall, weight, key board, lighting, screen, design and it runs really well.

I could list more positives but I haven't used the computer that much so i'll wait a bit, the only negative aspect I've noticed so far is that the track pad seems to die every once in a while and you have to click to "wake it up", not terrible but it gets annoying.

I'll update my review later once I use it more, how it good is it for gaming, where does it peak, where it's limits are, etc.

Overall great laptop for $800.

I love how quick this laptop is. I use it for work and Runescape, it runs flawlessly. The laptop itself seems a tad bit flimsy as its all made from plastic, it does not seem very durable. That being said, it is very very light. I came from a 17 inch Asus ROG which I still have and use, so it may be just that I am used to hauling around a brick and this MSI is not a brick. I love that this computer has a fan overide button. It only has 4gb of ram but I have not seen the need for more. I bought more ram to add on because I figured I would need more, but I will not install it until I am out of warranty. 10/10 I recommend. I bought on Black Friday so this was also a better deal than the Asus I had my eyes on, and this had an additional 1tb hard drive. LOVE IT. I am posting in the second week of 2019, I bought this Black Friday 2018. No issues to date.

Built super well, and great for gaming in general. However, Amazon tends to mix questions/answers without regard to options on this unit. Even though some of the Q/A says can do VR, this unit cannot unless you get the 1060+ GPU option(s).

Beyond that though, it's a really nice laptop and I noticed they improved the keyboard so not so mushy compared to prior rev.

In my case though, I was hoping could easily to mobile VR in the classes I teach and all over the web you will read how the 1050 TIs meet the minimum Oculus specs, but just not true on laptop versions with the Intel stuff that hijacks the GPU to some degree.

In my case I had to go back in for a 1060 version and my Son ends up with a great gaming laptop for Christmas since all return policies on opened hardware cost prohibitive in regards to trying to return.

[New Update 1:54 AM]
So Fan 2 kicks on when it needs to so there are no problems there. When the laptop gets hot it will kick on and help fan 1 with the heat.

After uninstalling NORTON ANTIVIRUS I have not had the black screen problem anymore. Woohoo

[New Update 1:00 AM]
I kept shutting down my laptop and restarting it to see if I kept getting the Black screen; I did. It would take like 10 minutes for explorer.exe to actually show my desktop. I then proceeded to uninstall Norton It's not a Antivirus I use, I use malwarebytes and when I uninstalled norton and it asked me to restart my computer; I did.

Voila. no more black screen. So far.

1) Also If this was a fresh copy of windows when I went to uninstall Norton it said it was installed in August of 2018 How is that possible if I went through the install process?

2) I went to Dragon Center and it shows that one of my fans is not working, it's just off. I'm not sure if it kicks on when the laptop reaches a certain threshold or if it's actually messed up. I will add pictures later.

[Below this is when I got the product]

This is like 10 minutes of me dealing with my laptop. The product feels plastic like. It's fast. I used CPU-z and when I went to the graphics tab it shows two graphic cards. The on board UHD and the 1050ti. After everything was installed the computer asked to do a Restart which I said why the hell not. The computer started again and to my surprise after the boot sequence I was stuck on a black screen with a mouse in the center. I could move the mouse around and when inputting Ctrl + Shift + Esc, Task Manager Opened up. I searched and it looks like Explorer.exe was running already so we should have seen the taskbar and everything So I decided to end that task and start it up again. Still nothing. I went to the "Start up" tab and saw something odd there. Something called "Program" Everything usually has a name and Program is definitely not normal; for me at least. I disabled it from starting and restarted my computer. black screen again. but after like 10 minutes or so the actual screen appeared now.

Bought this laptop after much deliberation as a replacement for my beloved, semi-broken (non functioning screen), and ancient (purchased in 2009) college laptop. I was looking at many Black Friday deals for entry/mid level gaming laptops as although I do not play many games, I wanted something with the dedicated hardware to expand any future possibilities. Having had many colleagues in the tech industry mention MSI as a great source for hardware, they were on the top of my search list for laptop brands.

The GV62 had everything I could need and the combination of processor (8th Gen i7 8750H), graphics card (GTX 1050Ti/4GB GDDR5), and storage (1TB HDD + 128GB SSD), provided by far the best value when comparing to Dell, HP, and Lenovo Legion products. To get the same value I would have had to spend at least $200 more.

So far my only real complaints would be as others have mentioned the case material seems to have a singular life goal of attracting fingerprints, and the case itself seems to have some flex to it. Additionally, the screen does not offer much resistance when opening, which while nice and allows for 1 handed opens, it does also let it "pop" open a half inch or so if tilted back on it's "spine". Not a deal breaker by any means, just something to note.

I love the placement of dual exhaust fans on the backside and the amount of venting on the bottom of the case. It is interesting to be able to see all of the cooling ports for the CPU and GPU, and will allow for easy maintenance with a compressed air can should it get dusty.

Overall I am extrememly pleased with my purchase so far and I look forward to hopefully a long future with this new awesome laptop! Thanks MSI & Amazon!

This laptop is lightning fast!

After being with my laptop since 2012, it was time for an upgrade.
This MSI laptop was the perfect match for me. A price that wouldn't break the bank but it would also fulfill all my needs. I needed something with an SSD, a good graphics card and a powerful processor so this one turned out to be perfect.
It boots up in like 3-4 seconds, which is awesome. Windows doesn't lag and most important of all, they don't install a unnecessary programs that slow down your computer and occupy hard drive space.
I've been playing Overwatch quite a bit lately and this laptop can handle it with ease. You can also have a 4k monitor or TV hooked up to it which is another bonus.
Another cool feature was the button that allows you to turn on the backup fan and also open the "Dragon Center" where you can customize lots of different things.
The laptop feels solid (quality build) and it looks sleek and modern. So far I am loving it.
If you buy it don't forget to redeem your free copy of the new Call of Duty!

The MSI GV62 series is great for PC gamers on a budget. While I typically don’t play FPS games, I’ve found this laptop is more than enough for fighting games, such as MK X, Street Fighter, and Soul Caliber VI, as well as the various Metroidvanias I’ve played on the machine.

My only complaint is with the red led backlighting of the keyboard. While this is a feature I was interested in when I purchased the laptop, I have yet to find a setting to turn it off, or to only have it come on at certain times, such as while gaming or in low light situations. As a result, the red backlighting is on constantly, which isn’t what I was expecting.

Overall, I feel that this MSI laptop is a great value for the price, and despite the one issue with the red backlighting, I would definitely recommend this laptop to others.
