Viva Naturals Evening Primrose Oil 1300mg, 120 Softgels

Just like all their essential oils, here is another quality Viva Naturals product. I use Evening Primrose oil as a DIY eye cream and it works better than any eye moisturizer. It's all natural and much more economical than those tiny little jars of anti-wrinkle cream. I really see a difference in minimal fine lines, and helps with tired feeling eyes at the end of the day. Just prick the large capsule with a pin, gently squeeze, and rub the capsule under your eye. Save the rest for later - or rub the rest onto your cuticles for a healthy, supple nail appearance. Primrose oil can be used for a ton of topical uses other than a daily supplement.

As time has gone on, I have found myself becoming a fan more and more of Viva Natural products. Let's see how this supplement measures up.

WHAT ARE THESE CAPSULES LIKE?
This supplement is oil in the soft caps. The size is in the same ball park as other essential fatty acids that I have taken, so it is on the larger side. There is not any noticeable odor. The jar comes in a box and is made of plastic not glass.

HOW ARE THESE TO TAKE?
If you have a hard time with larger pills, these might give you trouble, but I did not have a hard time with them. I surrounded them with water before they went down and down they went!

ANY BURP BACKS?
So far, when taken following a meal, I have had no burping back problems. I have even taken them on an empty stomach with no bad effects.

ANY CHANGES?
I do notice a calmer feeling when I take essential fatty acids and these are no exception. I do feel the difference with these. I have also had a lot of compliments on my skin- I have been taking these after a long break not having Evening Primrose Oil.

THE BOTTOM LINE
For a decent performer of Evening Primrose Oil that helped me feel a difference and seems to get people noticing my skin, this is a good bet. I have been enjoying them.

MY RATING
Five stars. I would buy these again so far. I will update if anything changes.

I tend to be a supplement snob. I buy usually just one or two brands that I consider to be high quality and without fillers/junk. One of those is Jarrow Formulas, which is my "go to" brand.

I think these evening primrose capsules by Viva Naturals fall into that category. They contain 1,300 mg of evening primrose per gel cap. They contain little, else - purified water, glycerin, and the gel itself, bovine gelatin.

The gel caps are fairly large so if swallowing is a concern, please note.

These are meant for consumption, and do tend to have an effect on the appearance of skin over time, due to its anti-inflammatory properties. The GLA (gamma linolenic acid) in it also helps against eczema, acne, and psoriasis. Some women also say it helps against menstrual cramps.

Some people also pierce the gel cap and apply topically. I feel it is better taken orally, but there are studies on both methods finding it effective.

I first tried Viva through their Vitamin-D3 and was happy at the quality provided and the lack of fillers. You can read about Evening Primrose on the internet but it is one of those oils containing essential fatty acids (in particular, gamma-linolenic acid or GLA which is an omega-6 fatty acid) that help a lot of things. Particularly, the essential fatty acids can help with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoprosis. It can help acne and overall skin health. This is NOT a women's only supplement. There is no estrogen or anything like that in these essential fatty acids. It is often branded as a women's only supplement because it may help with PMS symptoms, minimize breast pain or reduce hot flashes but there are plenty of benefits for men, as well!

I find it hard to review supplements, as it's difficult to isolate specific benefits. I wanted to try Primrose Oil because it is supposed to support women's health in general and to help with menopause symptoms in particular. Although I am not yet having the latter, I thought that trying this supplement might be preventative.

This supplement contains rather large, torpedo-shaped gel capsules (too large to fit through the slots of my vitamin container). They have no discernible scent. I have taken these at various times (i.e., both with and without meals) with no problems. I have not had any side effects from these capsules. At the same time, after taking them for several weeks, I have not yet noticed any particular benefits. Other reviewers mentioned skin improvements; this has not occurred for me, at least not yet. Others have suggested using this oil topically, so I may try that as well. At this point, I am not dissatisfied with this supplement, but it may be too soon to tell whether it will be helpful to me.

Until recently, I'd heard about this supplement but never tried it out. My wife and I have been taking another brand for a while now and *think* we've noticed some results. We've just stared using the Viva Naturals brand. As with so many supplements, it is hard to tell just how effective it is. My wife is over 50 and has had fewer hot flashes and sleeps more soundly at night when she uses it. I have minor skin issues and this seems to help in that department as well. A list of potential benefits include help with bruises, hemorrhoids, digestive problems, mood, and sore throats. It is also used for eczema, arthritis, menopause, PMS, hair and skin health, diabetes, Osteoporosis, heart health, blood pressure, obesity and more. Do your research to decide if GLA is something you may want to try out.

Viva's Evening Primrose Oil is fairly pure (just EPO, purified water, and the gelatin), though the casing isn't listed as vegan. The large 1300mg capsules are easy to swallow and it is recommended you take up to two a day spread throughout the day, so one bottle will last an individual at least two months. Priced right, it is worth testing if you think you might benefit from it. You can also puncture the gel caps and apply it topically.

GLA is an omega-6 fatty acid, but it is not an essential one like Viva claims. A healthy body can make GLA, but few of us are truly healthy. Malnourishment, overeating, overconsumption of sugar and alcohol, thyroid issues, trans fats, etc., all of these can contribute to the body's reduced ability to convert the parent omega 6 to GLA.

This is a good dose in large gel capsules. My concern is that the seal was not firmly affixed to the bottle, which means they might be using the wrong adhesive. This is a problem because oxygen can get into the bottle and degrade the pills. Hopefully they have addressed this issue.

As you age, your body needs different things like more antioxidants and Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. I really like all of Viva Naturals products and this Evening Primrose oil is no exception. Viva Naturals Evening Primrose Oil contains a high concentration of GLA (gamma-linolenic acid), a fatty acid that supports women’s health, and helps maintain healthy-looking skin.

These capsules are larger than a regular pill but about the same size as any other oil supplement capsules. They have no odor in the jar or after taking them. The jar is plastic but I wish it were glass for environmental reasons or even a biodegradable container.

Evening Primrose oil is also great as a topical moisturizer. Use a safety pin and put a hole in a capsule then squeeze it over your face, neck and hands. I usually do this before bed and really let it soak into my skin. I think my skin looks plumper and less fine lines then before I started using this supplement.

Evening Primrose was suggested by my holistic doctor to treat my Sjogren’s Syndrome (my very dry eyes). Derived from the seeds of the evening primrose plant it also contains omega 6 essential fatty acid. I was pleased with the results, however; have not used it in awhile. I am a fan of Viva Naturals including... their Vitamin D3 supplement, Magnesium Bisglycinate and amazing organic Rosehip Oil for the face. These capsules are way too large for me to swallow, however, it is easy enough to bite and suck out the pleasant tasting oil. On further reading, Evening Primrose is also used for hot flashes, nerve damage from diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Eczema and overall health of the skin. Contrary indications appear to be for those who have a bleeding disorder or who take medication to lower blood pressure. This supplement does not contain artificial colors, preservatives, GMO’s, gluten, soy, dairy or salt. All triggers for me to avoid. Evening Primrose is usually well tolerated and Viva Naturals a company that makes products of good quality and value.

Evening Primrose is a source of GLA, though borage oil and black currant oil contain more. Evening Primrose oil is generally about 8% GLA; these Viva Naturals softgels are 9.6% GLA.

GLA has been shown to be helpful for a number of conditions, including Raynaud’s phenomenon (in which the hands and feet are particularly effected by the cold). The study “Evening primrose oil (Efamol) in the treatment of Raynaud's phenomenon: a double blind study” in the journal Thrombosis and Haemostasis (1985) concluded that taking evening primrose oil improved the symptoms of Raynaud’s phenomenon.

But that’s JustMe.
