Starrett 264E Center Punch With Square Shank, 4-1/4

Not the least expensive center punch, but you get what you pay for. Works excellent for staking castle nuts, or any other punch requirements. As is normal with Starret products, this one will last me a lifetime.

This punch is exactly what I expected. A well made tool. I have previousliy bought Starrett tools and found them to be durable and made to the specifications advertised. The only complaint I have is that the tool is stamped with the Starrett model number and not the SAE designation. The only stamping on the punch is "264E". The designation "5/32" is not stamped on the tool. But I am picking the fly specks out of the pepper. This is a top drawer qualitiy punch that I definateliy would purchase again and strongly recommend.

What can I say. This is true starrett quality. Nothing else comes close. This thing is centered, balanced, and furnace hardened for years of service. Excellent punch. The hardened steel means the punch will not slip off, but will instead plant firm and permanently center mark tooled steel.

Have always preferred square punches as they don't roll.

Bought two of these. My last one had the spring inside and blew apart inside a month. These are the ones you want. Great for locating drill bits and pilots. Great for numbering steel parts et cetera. Probably want some finer point (tighter angle) ones too. These make good clear marks on hardened steel without problem and seem to be holding up well.

Description

The Starrett 264E center punch is 4-1/4" long and has a 3/8" thick square shank with a 5/32" (4 mm) diameter tapered point. The punch has a tempered steel shank for strength and a hardened steel point for wear resistance. The shank is knurled for grip and has a square shape to prevent it from rolling when placed on a work surface.

Center punches make small dimple marks in a workpiece to help guide a drill bit. Manual center punches have a metal shank with a point and are typically tapped with a ball-peen hammer to mark the material. Automatic center punches have an internal spring mechanism that enables them to mark the material without using a hammer, leaving one hand free for steadying the work.

A+++

Like most people I've just put a bit up against something started to drill and prayed it didn't walk on me. However this latest project involved installing several flurecent light fixtures into 2x4 rafters. Space was limited I couldn't afford for the hole to be an 1/8" or 1/4" off the mark. This tool passes the KISS test. Simple, tough, effective... Just what a handyman needs.

Well built, gets the job done!

Stays put does not roll off your workbench.

SOLID with a useful rubberized grip on the shaft, easy to grip. Strong and precisely formed. Good and heavy, too, which bespeaks quality. Life is too short to improvise, get the right tool for the job, and this is a top-quality center punch.
