• The small size of the connectors. The connectors that Auto-Vox uses are much smaller than the typical RCA type connectors most camera kits have. Where this really comes in handy is feeding the wire from the rear of the vehicle to the front. With the small connectors that Auto-Vox uses, most of the trim panels, door sill plates, etc. do not have to be removed in order to route the cable. Everything is small enough that it can be tucked under or fed through small gaps without needing to pull off interior pieces. This saves a lot of time and there is a lot less chance of breaking a trim clip or something.
• The camera works really well. The camera is probably the most critical part of these kits. If the camera is low quality, it won’t look good even if you hook it up to the world’s best HD monitor. The camera in this kit has a wide viewing angle, colors are pretty much spot on, and it has a good low-light performance without needing LEDs (which seem to cause glare in my opinion).
• The camera itself is quite small, so it’s not in the way or rear of the rear handle on my SUV. The bracket fits behind the license plate, I don’t have to worry about getting trouble from the cops here in NJ where obscuring a plate can get you pulled over. The camera is adjustable up/ down so I don’t have a problem seeing curbs even though my SUV sits pretty high.
• The IP68 rating is worth mentioning. Most kits will have an IP67 rating. Both are sealed against dust well enough (the “6”after the IP), but an 8 rating when it comes to water ingress is far better than a seven. A seven rating in real world use is essentially splash resistant. An 8 is actually waterproof, able to be submerged. Since I don’t make a habit of submerging my vehicle this may seem excessive, but where this matters is car washes. I’ve seen a lot of people with fogged up wet cameras & most of them are due to water getting in from car wash sprayers. This IP68 camera should handle that just fine.
I installed this kit in my Volvo XC90. When I bought the XC90, I knew it was going to need a backup camera. Since I had installed a different Auto-Vox kit in my last car, I decided to get this one & give it a shot. Installation was easy with the small connectors. It went pretty quick. Basically all there is to it was to tap into the reverse light bulb circuit for power, mount the camera (has strong 3M type tape so no drilling), run the cable to the front of the vehicle, and then plug in the monitor and mount where you want it. Finding the correct reverse wire is probably the hardest part. Google can help here or look for an access panel behind the rear lights and take a look which color the wires are for the reverse bulb. In my vehicle, I made the connection right behind the bulb holders inside the rear cargo area. The kit included “t-tap connectors” so there is no cutting, taping, soldering etc. needed. Easy enough that pretty much anyone could install this kit & wouldn’t need a bunch of tools to do it.
I purchased this backup camera mainly because it enables installation with just one power source instead of 2. You do pay extra for the convenience of connecting to just one set of wires. Other than that - this is just a standard backup camera and monitor. Image is ok - but there is little a bit of flickering on the screen - which is more or an annoyance than a hinderance. While installing, I tapped into the wiring for the reverse lights in my trunk as instructed. Make sure you check the polarity of the wires - you really don't want to mix them up. The splice connectors that come with this are pure junk. Both connectors failed to splice - and I've used splice connectors before without issue. Thankfully, I had some butt connectors at home which allowed me to finish the installation. After it was all installed, I discovered that the switch to turn the grids on and off was defective. I ordered a replacement which had a functional switch. Overall, this is not a high end system, but it is functional and easier to install than others that require splicing into the backup wires and the fuse box. Just wish the QC was better....
***update***
Seller reached out to me after reading my review to try and rectify the flickering. After a few emails back and forth, they sent out a new monitor. It was shipped from overseas - so took a couple of weeks, but it arrived as promised. Monitor appears to be a bit brighter which makes the image a bit clearer. I'm guessing the thin wires for the kit have something to do with the power and signal. Nonetheless, it is functional and better than not having a camera. Also, very pleased with the seller for their communication and efforts to rectify and work out a solution.
After installing it, which took some work to get the camera mounted and the wire through the car, it worked okay. However, it only worked for about a week before the picture was lost and the screen just showed white. I have not been able to figure out what went wrong. My guess is that the camera failed.
Update on 2/15/2019: Auto-Vox sent me a new kit to try. I replaced the display with the new display and everything works great. It was not the camera that failed. The Auto-Vox rep was very helpful and courteous. The system is a great retrofit to be able to have a rear view for safety. The picture is clear and accurate. I changed ny rating from a 1 to a 4. Had it worked the first time it would have been a 5.
Update: ***
Auto- Box contacted me back and sent me a new camera with a anit-interference for my camera. It helped out a lot and I love it, thank you Auto-Vox.
I installed this above the back doors on my 20 foot van, I have no visibility out those doors so if I am being tailgated I cannot see them in my side view mirrors. The video cable is extremely long, I forgot to measure it, but given how I had to run it I would say about 20 feet long. The power connectors are only about 5 feet as they meant to connect to a backup light, Instead I spliced wires onto them and ran them to the front along side the video cable to a switch and my fuse box. This way I can turn it on at will. The night visibility is very good for backing up into a dark driveway. That makes it useless for driving with it at night as the glare from headlights obscures the view, However, that is okay for my needs. If you have a bright light light behind you when backing up you will also have problems. This problem may be exaggerated in my case as I do not have it mounted down at the license plate as intended. I use the grid line mode. I don't like where the switch for that is as it only a about 5 feet from the camera. You basically have to decide and not plan on ever changing it as getting to it will be a pain. I have not driven it in the rain yet, so I hope that those complaining about that are incorrect. We will see.

Over the last several days I’ve been having conversation with Auto-Vox about their M1 backup camera. My unit would come on and drop off line. Come to find out they had some minor problems with a few units. They sent me a new unit with several links to YouTube on installation.
I want to commend them on their customer service. They were informative on a solution with help on checking out the unit.
Today I installed my back up camera is less then an hour. Great YouTube instructions. I would recommend this product and and support.
This is the one to get. I love the one plug wire instead of running two wires. It came with just enough wire to make it to the dash in a Ford Escape 2008. The cable splice clips worked perfectly. My dash is rough so I attached monitor to windshield glass (seems to be fine so far). As you run the wire from the back to the front, you may have to tuck it under trim, but it wasn't too bad. Bought a cheaper one at first, installed it, and it stopped working the second day. Auto Vox seems like a better product. Will keep buyers updated as I go.
I have a Camaro and when I was doing some sound proofing, I ran some split loom tubing from the trunk to the back seat so that made installation a lot easier but wiring is thin enough, it's probably wouldn't be that hard to do in most vehicles. The night light feature makes seeing out the rear pretty clear at night...much better than the budget cams.
Pros:
fairly easy to install
great picture...in color
optional backup guidelines
compact screen
discreet mounting above the license plate
Cons: the only con is that after about 6 months in the FL sun, the goop melted from the mount. What a mess! I replaced it with a Arkon Replacement Upgrade Suction mount https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000U0S304/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it works great.
Now, the part that really impressed me was I got rear ended and everything was smashed in, including the trunk and, of course, the license plate and camera. I ordered another Auto-Vox camera system as a replacement but once the repairs were made to the car, I realized I didn't need it. Had to replace everything else including the license plate but not the camera. It's still working great!
Just finished installing my new M1 Backup Camera. Out of the box its all fairly simple. Very few parts and the diagram on the instructions is pretty clear. I drive a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer EXT and I was concerned that the cable from the camera to the monitor would not be long enough, but it was with plenty left over. After the installation was complete I gave it a test run and I was very impressed at how clear the picture was. Very nice. The only issue that I had with this camera package was that the wires that go from the camera to the backup light wires for power were not long enough so I had to do some splicing to make them longer. I have a lift gate so its a longer distance than the average vehicle. Not a major issue but having to run to the store in the middle of the install was time consuming. After all is said and done, I am very pleased with this camera and for the money I would definitely recommend.
Purchased to install on a 2007 Toyota Highlander. The camera/monitor system is very simple in concept which was the primary reason for my choice. Mount backup camera, tap into reverse light wire for power, run cable to monitor mounted on dash or windshield. You can even select between options of showing with backup "grid" or without. There is a little toggle switch on the "connection" box (little black box where the power wire and video cable meet).
What took the longest was removing all the liftgate components for me to cleanly run the wire from outside/in. Whole process took about 4 hours including looking up all the "how to" removing trim panels and pieces on various youtube videos. Was able to able to completely hide the wiring in existing looms or rubber boots going from the exterior of the liftgate into the rear cabin of the Highlander, tapped into the reverse power wire on the drivers rear side, and then ran the video cable up the drivers side under various trim panels.
Monitor turned right on when putting it into reverse. Good rear coverage, and happy with the product.
