Much, much easier to read than the cheap linear-style gauges, but it did not reset to zero when the probe was fully pushed in.
I suspect this is just a sample defect and I will try another and report back if that one also has the same fault.
UPDATE: The replacement I received works PERFECTLY.
My hint would be that if the gauge does not read 0 while still in the package, it probably won't reset properly.
UPDATED REVIEW: "Shirley" at Godeson quickly contacted me regarding my dissatisfaction with the tire depth gauges and sent me replacements that are much better and work properly. Out of 8 replacement gauges, one of them does not read accurately- the needle is off by 1/32". I am happy with their customer service and with the tools.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: The concept of this tool is great; the dial is super easy to read. However, the quality just isn't there. I bought ten of these for our college automotive program: 8 out of 10 were way too stiff. The gears inside seem to be too tight. When you press the probe into the tread, the probe is so stiff and resistant to moving that it dents into the tire, giving an inaccurate reading. I even pressed the tool against a solid, flat surface and could not get the tool to read "0". The gears do not move smoothly inside the tool, so when you move the probe tip just a little, it springs back. This also causes the needle to be jumpy, so on the other two units that did have a more normal amount of tension, you still can't get an accurate reading because the needle jumps between readings, or springs back into place after moving just a little.
It might work okay for DIYers, but it is not a professional-grade tool.
... well, perhaps too solid. Like another reviewer observed, the mechanism was very stiff and hard to move, as received. It seems to loosen up a bit with repeated cycling but remains stiffer than necessary, in my opinion. Let's remember, we are pressing the tip into "rubber". If I can't feel when the tip makes contact with the rubber, due to inherent stiffness of the mechanism, I will probably not get an accurate reading. I hope it will loosen up some more over time !!! Otherwise, I am very impressed with the solid design and build of this gauge. It represents a very good value and feels like it will last a life time, unlike many other plastic gizmos on the market.
This gauges works great for analyzing tire depth. It is small and compact. Great for use in a car, bike, motorcycle, etc.
It measures tire depth in 1/32" increments. There are ticks on the dial for up to 1/128"
Dimensions can be seen in the photos that are uploaded.
Pros:
*Easy an intuitive to use
*Accurate
*Easy to read
Cons:
*None
Additional Considerations:
Be aware this measures in 1/32" increments. The other popular unit of measurement is millimeters. So just be aware what you are measuring in so you get an accurate reading.
So, for example, when you get a dial reading of 5, that translates to 5/32" which converts to ~4mm. So don't be surprised if gauges are "reading differently" because they could be different units.
Overall: 5/5 stars (>=.5 rounds up, <.5 rounds down) => 5 stars
If you have any further questions regarding the product in my review please leave a comment below and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
The only reason I did not give this five stars is because as received the mechanism was very stiff and hard to move. This is not all bad since the reading does not change when removed from the tire and as it is used it seems to be loosening a bit but you do not want to push in the small pin (to protect in storage) with a finger. That said it is well zeroed, seems very accurate, and is easy to read. I just have to wonder if the movement is supposed to be this stiff.

This gauge has a large dial face and is easy to read even with the protective plastic still on. It arrived zeroed out and the first time I attempted to reset the needle the gears inside felt like it slipped a little and the needle never made it back to zero. The more I used it the further away from zero it became, as of right now its "zeros out at 8/32 (see picture). It still measures the tread thickness but I need to do simple math to get the correct tread wear depth. I like that is reads in 1/32 on an inch and isn't made out of cheap plastic. I can't complain to much because it didn't cost a lot of money, and it will get the job done.
OMG. what a great gauge, I wish that I've had this all along instead of putting up with those little pocket gauges that are hard to read in low light. this gauge is accurate and easy to read. I've only had this for a few weeks, hopefully it'll last awhile.
These arrived really stiff. It hurt my fingers trying to push them in. Dropped some air tool oil in the hole and ran it back and forth. Now it pushes effortlessly and 1 year later still accurate to the nearest 1/4 mark of a 1/32nd. Housing is tough and can be thrown onto tables or toolboxes
Works as advertised but, as other reviewers have noted, it arrived with the glass (i.e. clear plastic) scratched. The whole packaging looked as if it had been pulled from a flooded warehouse. Not a showstopper but pretty annoying for a newly purchased item.
